I may be totally wrong but I didn't think coal was ever mined in Bedfordshire.

There was a Bedford Mine in Leigh in Lancashire.

I keep getting that one when I search the web but as you can see he's on two censuses as a mine owner. I can find him in kelly's 1910 for Bedfordshire listed as a magistrate no mention of the mine then he was living at The Dene Woburn Sands. Its a mystery  Huh

1901sch:30 1 Dynesor Rd

Hi Trees if you take a look at the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives +Records
http://blars.adlibsoft.com/form.html
You will find mention of George Charles Gostelow Lockhart there, he appears to have been connected to the Marquis of Bute who owned many collieries in Wales.
So perhaps the colliery was in Wales and he was a sort of absentee landlord.

Thanks John so he owned land over a large area and the mine somewhere else entirely I think he is a good candidate for a bit more research twigglet or not
His wife was the daughter of a publican from Lower Heyford Oxfordshire accidentally found them when I found the publican's burial in LH as from Luton Beds they must have taken his body "home" to be buried with his wife he was with them in 1881. I wonder how George C G met Matilda? It could be interesting

In 1861 and 1871 he was a mere coal  coke and salt merchant. Perhaps he embellished his occupation in line with his social rise? In 1901 he was a Coal owner and another hand has added Mine man

Matilda's father was a coal dealer from the pub maybe that was the common ground.

He doesn't appear as an owner of land in either Beds or Herts in 1873

Hi Trees nice to have posh in the family.I find this thread interesting because around 1900 my ancestors moved from Bedford down to the Rhondda to work in the collieries owned by the Marquis of Bute, previously they were mostly ag.labs.
I often wonder what made them come to Wales to do such a dirty and dangerous job!
My Grandmother used to say that some landowner or other died and that the land they worked was sold off.
They walked from Bedford to Wales all 9 of them carrying my gran who was just a few weeks old, it puts a new meaning on "getting on your bike"
We have it very easy these days!

interesting Bethan we have two lines moving to the S Wales minefield one from Cornwall One from Devon about that time I often wonder how they knew there would be work there. Apparently there were recruiting agents touring the West Country I wonder if the Bute connection was instrumental with the "advertising" in Bedfordshire its worth a look isn't it
