Could someone please help in deciphering the name of the birth informant on my GGrandfathers birth record? He was born in Limerick City
I've posted the full record as I thought it might be easier to make comparisons in the writing which is difficult to read.
Signature, Qualification and Residence of Informant----Mary ?, ?? (possibly "cousin"??), Present at birth, Leas Lane
Hope it's ok to post this on Limerick Board or should it be elsewhere?
Thanks Sio

First letter F with a great flourish? and ending in "--mark" - definitely a "k" at the end, same letter as in "Watch Maker"....
Oh hang on.....
is it "Mary her x mark ---ousan (her surname)
I don't think the word is "Cousan (cousin) the supposed C is quite different from the C in Cecil and Catherine..

Hi Ambly,
Thanks for your help. You are right about the cousin part--think Iwas clutching at straws there! Ronson looks a strong possibility. Sio

Does the informant's surname possibly begin with B?

Hi
I found the extract form birth register fascinating, I have one from the same time with the same dreadful writing, informant is (almost sure) Mary Benson her mark (illiterate) present at birth. Is the father's name John Walsh Jeweller and Watchmaker. If so he carreid on business at 54 Catherine St, just round the corner from Upper Cecil St. What house no is that 55? My mother was born in Upper Cecil St so I'm know it some what.

Lee's lane is not too far away see link, long gone but off a place called Carey's Rd. I wonder was Mary Benson some kind of a mid wife?

Ahgadowey and Ambly, thank you both for your help, B it probably is and yes it does look like the first letter in the Registrars name which is impossible to read as the writing is atrocious.
LimerickLad, The father was John Walsh, Jeweller and Watchmaker. Any information I have regarding his business has John in either George or Ellen Street . Did I miss it in Trades Directories? Thank you for that--interestingly, I recently found the marriage record for John and his 2ND wife Catherine Sheehy --John was living in George St and Catherine in Catherine Street!
I'm not sure the 55 is referring to a house number but the number in the register -the full number is 355. I think you're right in that Mary Benson was a midwife. Thanks for the link too.
I'm going to go with Mary Benson her mark, present at birth so a VERY big thank you to you all.
Sio

I think all the births that I have, which use the phrase "her mark" include the actual MARK, where the person wrote an X on the cert. I haven't checked all my certs, but certainly the 3 I've looked at have this clear X (which is the "mark")

I quite agree eadaoin
I believe the "x" mark is written after "mary" and before "mark" on the same line, whereas the "her written more or less above the 'x".
