Is there anyway to stop the Search facility from returning results for words that contain part of the search string? In other words, to match whole words only.

For example, if I search for the surname 'Ord', I get every item that contains 'ord' such as Lord, password, ordinary etc, literally thousands of results to wade through for a rare name.

If it is not possible might I suggest that this be added at a future date.

Many thanks - Framesmiths1816

Hi again

Sorry it isn't possible - although we're aware of the problem.

One way around it is to use a regular search engine, using Rootschat as the URL.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Ok, I see the work around cuts the problem down.

Is the time issue one of processor time or search time? If it was search time, to the user, then a selectable option would allow both.  If the issue is processor time then I guess we are stuffed.

Thanks for the information. I still think Rootschat is remarkably useful site even with this issue.

SIT Link? I cannot see anything labelled SIT at the bottom of any of the pages I am currently looking at? Am I being dense and missing something obvious?

The biggest problem is the enormous data base (over 1.8 million postings)  Shocked

But it's the enormous database what makes the site so useful  Grin Grin

Bob

ps sorry, SIT = Surname Interests Table, the link is called [your surname interests] Smiley

I do understand the issues having worked as a DB/SQL programmer in the past.

As you can probably tell, I am new to Rootschat and I have not yet explored or found all of the finer points and detail that make up the site.

Please don't think I am complaining, far from it, In my first week I have made more progress on my family history puzzles than has been made for a number of years (even decades) previously.

No problems Smiley

the site is huge and we (still) haven't got all the necessary buttons in place.

Still on the subject of searching, if anybody is searching for definitions, explanations, acronyms, links, dates, etc (rather than names), then we have a few other alternatives:

RootsChat Reference Library => Lexicon (click here)
(Tip: click on a category - on the right - for related topics)

RootsChat Reference Library => Topic Catalogues (click here)

RootsChat Reference Library => Useful Links (click here)

RootsChat Reference Library => Time Lines (click here)
