Hi, I'm looking for info re George and Elizabeth Simmons who lived around Atcham in the 1920s, and then Elizabeth and her two children moved to Sansaw Heath after George died in about 1935. Also their parents, etc - Elizabeth's mother was Elizabeth Bowen (nee Handley) who lived at Sansaw Heath, her father was Benjamin Bowen (whereabouts/death unknown). George's mother apparently lived around Hardwicke Estate near Grinshill. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Carole,
Any chance you would have time to look up Benjamin Bowen in 1871 and previous? The only BB born in Norbury that shows up in the 1881 census is married to someone else! (Not sure if this is a previous marriage or another person entirely).

Although the 1881 Benjamin has the same profile - his occupation is very diverse. I checked the 1891 and he and Betsy D are on it
The only way to find if the 1861 and 1871 entries are the right Benjamin is to buy a copy of the 1887 marriage cert which will give his fathers name and occupation
I have only been able to use the birthplace shown on the 1891/1901 but it can often be different on earlier censuses
The Benjamin & Maria I mentioned above also had a son Benjamin b 1851 in Aslerton
Thomas & Elizabeth were living in Aslerton but children shown as b Norbury so it could be either entry and without the marriage cert showing his fathers name there is no way of knowing

I think I've solved it - the IGI entry shows 13 MAR but I think they have incorrectly transcribed it and it should be 13 MAY
I checked the June quarter on the full GRO index and there is a match for Benjamin and Elizabeth under June qtr 1887 Ellesmere 6A 1347
Funnily enough - the marriage is not transcribed on freebmd
Another trip to Shropshire CC I'm afraid

Hi Carole,
I got Benjamin and Elizabeth's marriage certificate today. The date is April 11, 1887, in the parish church of Great Ness. Benjamin's dad is also Benjamin Bowen, a labourer. Benjamin was 34 years old (so born 1853), and he was a bachelor and shepherd and his residence was Hadnal.
