1871 for Asterton

Benjamin Bowen 50  b Church Stretton - farmer of 6 acres
Maria   44   b Wistanstow

I think you will need a copy of Lewis's birth cert to find Margaret's maiden name as I cannot find a marriage.   It could possibly be the one in June 1842 but there are 2 males and only one female name on the same page

Hi Carole,
I've just ordered a copy of Benjamin's birth certificate - I queried Shropshire office and they found it.

Hi Carole,
I got Benjamin's birth certificate today.  He was born Oct. 23, 1851 in Asterton, District of Norbury.  His mother was Margarett Bowen formerly Mathews.

Hi

Well - I think we have yet another "complication" with the Bowen family

Firstly - I now think they married pre-1837 as neither of the Benjamin Bowen marriages on freebmd matches to a Margaret Matthews/Matthews on the GRO index

The 1851 shows a son Richard Bowen aged 10 and freebmd has his birth in December qtr 1840 Clun

The family are not under Bowen on the 1841 but here is what I think is the 1841 entry

Asterton - Norbury - all surname Mathews and all born in county

Thomas 55 ag labourer
Margaret 55
Margaret 20
Edye (female and could be Edie - Edith) 4
Richard 8 months
HO107; Piece 920; Book: 17;  Folio: 4; Page: 5

Benjamin was born around 1819 according to the 1851 census so would be approx 22 in 1841 which would be rounded down to age 20 giving a birthyear of approx 1821

There is a 20yr old Benjamin Bowen male servant living in the township of Great and Little Berwick?? (not sure of spelling)

and a 25 yr old Benjamin Bown (image looks like Bowen) ag labourer living in Claverley

So Margaret and her two children were living with her parents in 1841 in Asterton.  Now...if Margaret and Benjamin had married before 1841, would her surname not be shown as Bowen (and the childrens' as well) even if she was staying with her parents?
Maybe she was married to someone else before Benjamin?

I found a Benjamin Bowen on IGI born 17Feb1819 in Church Stretton, father is also Benjamin Bowen, mother is Jane.

I think the enumerator has just entered her under her parents surname in error.   Richard's birth was registered as Bowen in 1840

Quote
The 1851 shows a son Richard Bowen aged 10 and freebmd has his birth in December qtr 1840 Clun

Daughter "Eydie" was born before 1837 and I also found these christenings on the IGI

BEATRICE BOWEN  Christening:  10 JAN 1848   Norbury, Shropshire   Father:  BENJAMIN BOWEN    Mother:  MARGARET

WILLIAM BOWEN  Christening:  08 SEP 1844   Norbury, Shropshire  Father:  BENJAMIN BOWEN    Mother:  MARGARET

EMMA BOWEN Christening:  14 DEC 1845   Lydbury North, Shropshire   Father:  BENJAMIN BOWEN    Mother:  MARGARET
freebmd shows a death in 1850 for Emma

An interesting 1851 entry for Asterton

Thomas Mathews 66 b Clun ag labourer
Margaret 65 b Norbury
Adda 14 grand daughter b Norbury
HO107; Piece: 1983; Folio: 292; Page: 1

Ada/Adelaide etc - nothing on freebmd/IGI under Mathews or Bowen

She could have no connection to Benjamin and Margaret - could be the daughter of another family member

She could be Margaret's illegitimate daughter

A parish record search is needed for the marriage

Hello

I think that the marriage of Benjamin and Margaret might possibly be registered in the second quarter of 1842 at Shrewsbury after allowing for a mix up in the numbering. Benjamin is (uniquely) shown as 7 281 and Margaret as 18 281 and there is one missing male from this latter reference.

Hi Posteria - I think my glasses must have been misted over when I checked the GRO index for that 1842 marriage - I stupidly only checked under Mathews and should have also checked Matthews!!  I wonder why the references are different?

Hi Cassiar - re: IGI entry - no birth reg for a Richard Matthews but Richard Bowen's birth reg fits.  Born in the December qtr and is 8mths old in June 1841 when the census was taken

Could be an interesting birth cert - registered as Bowen but christened as Matthews.

However - 1861 census has him as Richard Mathews aged 20 b Norbury and working as a servant in Asterton

Hello Carole

I think that the reference shown for Benjamin is simply a mistake. The GRO Index is a typed list and the reference has probably been typed wrong, at that stage.

A quick glance at Shrewsbury marriage registrations from 1840 to 1844 indicates that the volume reference is invariably 18. I suspect that the odd few others that show up as a different number are also mistakes.

Volume reference 7, as shown in 1842 for Benjamin, is clearly not a valid reference for Shrewsbury.

Is there a Benjamin and Jane Bowen in the 1841 census?  ...the parents of Benjamin born in 1819 in Church Stretton?
