My reason for digging! A baby nutkin!

I just happily received a marriage record from GRO. Have a question-
It reads "married in the Providence Chapel Hope Street according to the rites and ceremonies of the Independents." What is that? I assume not Anglican. The couple was married April 9, 1859 in Kingston Upon Hull. Thank you- Kristin

Your assumption is correct. But also, being independent, means not Methodist or any of the other organised groupings. May have had loose links to other independent churches, but anyone who thinks it is easy to follow their make up should read Garrison Keilor's Lake Woebegone Days, where he describes how the people in the sect to which he belonged had originally been Plymouth Brethren but had then split repeatedly, usually over something that related to an interpretation of a piece of scripture. So independent really can mean totally independent and sod the rest of them. Except when there are exceptions, but let's not go down that route.

I have the book "Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull". It says, "Providence Independent Chapel, Hope Street (Congregational). Built 1797, restored in mid 19th century. Seating for 1,150. The building was almost hidden from view between the end of Hope St., a court off Chariot St., and Chapel St. The last taking its name from this building which was almost square in plan with galleries". There's a bit more about changes post 1860. Hope this helps.
