ROPKINS Family - Hexton / Westoning
« on: Monday 20 October 08 22:22 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

Help please!

I am trying to connect my relatives in middlesex to those in Hexton and westoning.

I believe that Hannah Ropkins b. abt 1806 was born in middlesex although census says westoning.

If anyone has access to baptism records if they could confirm if a Hannah Ropkins was born in westoning 1806 that would be very helpful.  I understand the Ropkins family were quite influential in Westoning so any other info would be appreciated also.

Many thanks

Nik

Westoning parish register up to 1812 has been extracted onto the IGI, but there are no Ropkins. There are no Ropkins burials in Westoning on the NBI, which goes up to 1852.

Censuses/NBI show that James William Ropkins born c1830 in Westoning married and lived in Hexton, but you would need to consult the microfilm of Westoning parish register to get details of his baptism and his parents.

Looking at 1851 there was a William Ropkins living in Hexton age 22 birthplace Westoning, living with his grandmother Sarah Wilkins widow 72 grocer b Maulden Beds

The only Ropkins in Westoning in 1851 were Hannah widow 46 Grocer b Hexton Herts, with daughter Ann single 20 b Westoning.

In 1841 Hannah was apparently already widowed, age 35 not born in Beds, James William 11, and Ann 10.

There's a baptism of Hannah Wilkins in Hexton on 9 Sept 1804, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah.

Is this the Hannah in the census to whom you are referring? I can't see that was described as birthplace Westoning. If she were married then she wouldn't have been a Ropkins at birth, so there'd be no baptism in Westoning. But I can't find her marriage to Mr Ropkins. There's nothing in Herts in the Allen Marriage Index. It's possible that it took place in Westoning so isn't on the IGI. You need to find the marriage - I would try the microfilm for Westoning which is available from your nearest LDS Family History Centre - a list is available at www.familysearch.org

There was a William Hopkins age 32 buried in Westoning on 27 Feb 1837, and I wonder if somewhere along the line Hopkins may have turned into Ropkins. 'Annah 'Opkins may well have been written as Hannah Ropkins

A2A at http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp has a few mentions of Ropkins in Westoning, but 20th century where Edgar Luke Ropkins of Hartford Connecticut, who was a son of James William Ropkins of Hexton, made bequests to Westoning

I can find no evidence that the original Ropkins were an influential family, or that they were in the village for more than one generation. However a William Benjamin Ropkins JP lived in Westoning in the 1920s, and may have been another son of John William.

morning,         from the Monumental Inscriptions of St Mary Magdelen,Westoning surveyed 1912 & transcribed by the Beds FHS in 2004

A088 Headstone
Elizabeth Ropkins, born 1 March 1831 died 31 March 1884

A089 Headstone
To the memory of William Ropkins who departed this life February 24th in the year of our Lord 1837 aged 32 years; also of Hannah wife of William Ropkins who departed this life January 3rd in the year of our Lord 1860 aged 36 years, "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God"

The Elizabeth who died 1884, is most likely the Ann E Ropkins unmarried aged 48, Draper & Grocer as on the 1881 census living in Westoning with niece Ann E Ropkins age 22 born Hexton, Herts

regards John

Good moaning John

That's very useful - perhaps it's the NBI that transcribed Ropkins as Hopkins. The MI transcript seems to be in error as Hannah would have been 56, not 36, on death in 1860, otherwise she'd have been only 13 when her husband died!

Still doesn't help with the marriage, as I'd made the assumption that William Hopkins was actually Ropkins, but still couldn't see the marriage. I suspect it may have been in Westoning, which for 1830ish isn't on either the IGI or BVRI

Regards

Thank you for the information.  That would mean hannah was married to William

(looks like on 1841 census he is Fareham Lunatic asylum)  Wm Ropkins b. 1786 Although it is in hampshire which is some distance??)

Cannot find what happens to the other Ropkins in Hampshire - James W b. 1789 who i believe marries elizabeth wells in clerkenwell around 1805?  which if we can link would mean he is Williams brother and would link the two families together?  Might be along shot.

James W only appears in 1841 census with sons David, William and George?

Any thoughts?

If William Ropkins age 32 was buried in Westoning in Feb 1837, I have grave doubts that he was 55  in 1841 in Fareham. So I think that shoots down your long shot, although I've no idea if William in Fareham might have been connected to the James who married in Clerkenwell.
Not a clue either whether there's any link between Westoning and either Hampshire or Clerkenwell. The only way of proving anything is to find the marriage of William Ropkins and Hannah Wilkins to see if William's parish of residence is named

Pallots Marriage Index shows a marriage in 1802 at St Andrews Holborn between James Ropkins and Elizabeth Wells

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engbdf/westoninggc.html

article from 1927 mentions a Mr. W.B. Ropkins of Westoning as Governing Director of the Gaius Estates and Building Society, Limited whose chief offices are in Westoning.

Also there is a Ropkins Close in Westoning
