Is there anyone researching the name Vennen? I have a William Thomas Vennen, born in Cornwall, probably around 1820. His wife was Jane (maiden name not known). They had a daughter Mary Jane, born 1844 who married Benjamin Griffiths in Plymouth Devon. Benjamin was in the navy.
I have a long tree of descendants but I can't find any records in Cornwall relating to earlier Vennens.
Any help would be appreciated

Does Mary Jane's marriage certificate say what William Thomas's occupation was?
I actually think this might be them in 1861: Central Street, Plymouth, Devon RG9/1440 folio 73 page 58 Thomas Vennen, 38, seaman RN, b. Liskard, Cornwall Jane, wife, 28, b. Go???ch, Cornwall Jane, 15, b. ditto Thomas, 12, b. Plymouth
freebmd shows a death for Thomas Vennen in 1868 (aged 45) and for Jane in 1871 (aged 43).

In Gwennap, 11 Oct 1825, there is a marriage of Dorothy Toy (widow) to Samuel Meagre. I suspect that Dorothy "Mayor" in 1851 is the same person.
In 1841 they are in Calstock as 'Magar': HO 107/133/2 folio 8 page 8 Dorothy Magar, 50, 'widow' (crossed out) Jane, 14 Catherine, 12 Mary, 9 Richard Toy, 20, engineer William Toy, 20, ditto all b. Cornwall. (possibly Richard and William children from the first marriage, the girls from the second marriage?)
There is also in 1818 a baptism in Calstock for Richard Toy, son of Richard and Dorothy.

not sure what's going on with Jane's surname though. This birth cert may help
Mary Jane Venning june qtr 1845 Stoke Damerel vol 9 pg 442

Hi Sandgrounder,
I have been having a play about and found 1841 census but so far have only found this marriage (same marriage ospey has found)
Thomas VENION = Jane TOY Sep 1851 Plymouth 9 552
I wondered if Jane may not have been Mary Jane's mother but she is listed as married by 1851 so I am really not confident it is the correct marriage. Only a possible wife of Jane Toy and Jane's name is not Toy. Birth certificate for Mary Jane will be required here.
Alas with both these names there are oh so many variants
Here are a couple more entries of interest re Jane's family
Samuel MEAGRE = Dorothy TOY Widow 11 Oct 1825 Gwennap
TOY Richard bap 23 Mar 1818 Calstock parents Richard and Dorothy father miner of Newbridge
Richard TOY sojourner = Dorothy HOOPER 2 May 1812 Calstock
Calstock info available here. http://www.calstock.info/census/people_intro.htm
Cheers Kris

Hmm, how about a birth for wee Thomas, as well? Haven't spotted him yet (I don't think he's the Thomas John Vening b. 1848)
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ has a Navy record for Thomas Vennon, b. Linkinhorn 12 August 1821, volunteered 07 December 1853 and for William Thomas Venning, b. Plymouth 04 August 1850.
If wee Thomas is William Thomas, then he married in 1869 to Emily Julian (still can't see birth) and is on later censuses in Plymouth.

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the trouble to look up information for me. I am overwhelmed!
With all the information provided, particularly the link to the Dorothy Toy/Samuel Meagre marriage it all seems to have fallen into place, and I am sure that this is my family.
Thank you all again.
Sandgrounder.

That's an interesting one! I wonder why the delay? They obviously took him "home" to be baptized!
Thanks again
