Service Record: Gretna Police - World War 1
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 19:25 UTC (UK) »

Having retired from the RIC in Ireland after 30 years service, my great grandfather joined the Gretna Police in 1916 and stayed there for the duration of World War 1.  I see from Wikipedia online that there was a huge cordite munitions factory in Gretna at the time, and that the workers had a reputation for drunkenness, so I guess that's why my great grandfather ended up joining the Gretna Police.

I'm interested in obtaining a copy of his service record for his time in Scotland.  Can anyone tell me how I might go about applying for it?  I don't even know where these records might be kept.

Thanks.

Hi RoisininIreland,

I've done a bit of googling and found this on SCAN..
http://www.scan.org.uk/knowledgebase/topics/policerecords_topic.htm

" Five police forces (Strathclyde, Northern, Grampian, Fife, and Dumfries and Galloway) have deposited substantial historical records (including the records of predecessor forces) with local authority archives but retained certain records themselves."

So I'd recommend a 2 way approach.

Contact D&G police force and ask if they have police records of the era you are interested in.

Contact info:
http://www.dumfriesandgalloway.police.uk/contacts/intro.htm

And...

Contact the D&G council Archive Centre
http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2300

Police records aren't listed on teh site above but they may still be there?

A couple of emails and I hope you find the records!

All the best,
Pam

Pam,

Thanks for spending so much time looking in to this for me.  (I had actually forgotten that I had posted this message.)

Around the time I put up my query, I emailed Dumfries and Galloway and the Senior Personnel Assistant replied to me looking for my great grandfather's name, so he could check the records.  I haven't sent on his name, but haven't heard anything since. (I just emailed him again for an update.)

I'll certainly check out the  D & G Council Archive Centre.

I very much appreciate your help, thanks Pam.

Regards,
Roisin
