Robinson of Whinfell
« on: Monday 15 September 08 03:05 UTC (UK) »

Hi, Trying to find the burial of Thomas ROBINSON born abt 1770 & died somewhere between 1841 and 1845. He was a farmer & lived mainly in Whinfell, married Margaret THOMPSON of Whinfell 1791 at Grayrigg.
Had 4 children baptised there - Jane 1792, William 1794, Mary 1795, Agnes 1796.
Then 2 at Orton -
Thomas 1797 (was of Scalesbeck, farmer), Elizabeth 1798 (was of Bullflat, farmer).
Then these I think belong to him at Sedbergh - John 1802 (married Jane Hilton 1845), Sarah 1804 (married George Lambourn 1832; Miles 1805 (married Agnes Wharton 1841; and Richard 1807 (married Isabella abt 1832).

Does anybody recognize this Thomas ROBINSON or Margaret (THOMPSON) please contact me,
Jenny Williams

Hi Jenny,

I will probably be visitng Sedbergh in a few weeks time and will check in the local History Society to see if there are any burials of Thomas Robinson or Mary there.

I see on freebmd there is a Thomas Robinson died 1849 Sedbergh and a Mary Robinson 1839 Ledbergh  (prob Sedbergh). Do you think these could be the ones?

Regards

Thankyou for your kind offer but I know Thomas didn't die there (Sedbergh). I've narrowed down his death as between 1841 & 1845 due to marriages of 2 of his children, him being deceased by 1845. He was listed as a husbandman on one MC & farmer on the other. He married Margaret (not Mary) & had 4 children at Sedbergh - John 1802, Sarah 1804, Miles 1805 & Richard 1807. There is a Margaret who may be his wife who was buried Sedbergh 9 May 1837 from Frostrow (not sure where this is) aged 73 yrs (B.c.1764) who could be the correct person but not sure. Initially I thought he married Margaret Capslack in Dent but have ruled them out because of the births of their children. He could I think be the Thomas who married 1791 @ Grayrigg who was from Whinfell Margaret Thompson of the same place. So a bit of a mystery really, Jenny

Frostrow is in the Sedbergh area and I think is one of those places which is so close to county boundaries that it's hard to know where to look for records - Yorkshire or Westmorland.

I suspect your Robinsons might be linked to my best friend's family. I need to dig out the research which I did for her and if I find anything relevant, I'll get back to you.
