inverness parish records lookup please - dowler or dooler
« on: Thursday 23 October 08 14:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Trying to track down the following:

Richard (Charles) Dowler or Dooler b c 1824 Fort George, Scotland.
He was the son of Richard Dooler or Dowler, b c 1797 probably Audlem Cheshire, and Ann nee unknown b c 1797 Scotland.

I have the family in 1841 census when they were back in Audlem, but I would like to know if Richard senior's father is mentioned anywhere, either in the baptism record of Richard Charles, or in the marriage record of Richard & Ann (who presumably married in Scotland).

I see Fort George is a military place, so guess that Richard senior might have been a soldier ? (he was a labourer in Cheshire).

There is an entry in the Cheshire parish register site for a Richard (Dooler) bap c 1797, but the parents it gives don't make sense, which is why I'm trying this route !

Hope someone can help,

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris

From the Scotlands People site:

There is a marriage for a Richard Dowler, gunner Royal Artillery & Ann Steedsman on 6th March 1818, Leith North, Edinburgh.

Nothing showing for Richard Charles so far

It might be worth checking the National ARchives for a military record

There's a  baptism for a Sarah Dowler, 15 January 1819, Leith North, d/o Richard Dowler and Ann Steedsman but no other Do*ler baptisms in Scotland 1818-1830

Hi Gadget,

Thanks so much for these !

On the marriage, did it give Richard's father at all ? Short of getting the cert, is there another way I could find out ?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris

it was just the entry in the parish records - no certs in those days - and what was included varied  Undecided

If you PM me an e-mail, I'll send you what it has.

Hi Gadget,

OK, pm'd you !

By the way, I did go to Nat Archives, and found a reference to Richard's discharge in 1839 !

Cheers,
Chris
