Moloney family of Dromalty
« on: Friday 24 October 08 03:24 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor John Moloney arrived in Australia in 1864 (born 1841). His sister Ellen Moloney arrived in 1868 (born 1848). Both were from Dromalty, and their parents were William Moloney and Mary nee Ryan (this comes from arrival records and marriage certs when in Australia). William was described as a 'portrait painter'. William and Mary were still alive and living in Dromalty in 1868.

I've no idea of how parish records are held/accessed in Ireland, but if anyone has access to the Cappamore parish records for the 1840's (they were Catholic) I'd be very interestedin learning whether there are any clues about the family there.

Further, any information at all about Dromalty would be appreciated - there's little on the web.

Also, in his application to be a teacher he wrote:
"“Until I was thirteen years of age I received my education at home by the aid of a private tutor. I was then for two years a pupil at the Nicker National School and afterwards for two years in a classical school in the village of Hospital. The last year of my school education was at the St. John’s National School at Limerick. I was taught Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Grammar, Geography, Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, Bookkeeping, Latin, Greek and French. When I left school I had a good knowledge of these subjects. In a period of nine months I was a student in the Jesuit College in Limerick ..... “

Any information about these schools would also be appreciated.

cheers

Hello Matt
I am not able to help you in your search but I too am researching the name Maloney/Moloney in Limerick and am at the "clutching at straws" stage.  I just wanted to ask, if you come across Timothy and Ellen at any time could you let me know please? Timothy was an ostler so I doubt he was able to provide a private tutor for his family. Son William went to England where he married Catherine Moran in 1854. They were my 2x gt grandparents.  The church record entry for the marriage (in Salford, Lancashire) gives both parents' names and states that William was from Limerick. I do not know whereabouts.

Good luck in your research. If I come across Dromalty I will certainly get back to you.
