William Womersley, born 1801 Southowram, Yorkshire (from 1841 census). I wish to trace his parents if possible.  Does anyone have access to the parish records please?

Hello,

This entry could be in the Bishops Transcriptions - Halifax Church regester are in a very poor condition 1802-1805 with many the ink has rubbed off at the bottom of pages. (Entries crushed in right to the bottom edge). The Bishops Transcripts are much clearer- thus used by IGI. With the local FHS -CD'S it may be only the church entries are in these CD transcribed rewrites-Thus many missing and hit & miss.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth.

Although the IGI reference wozzle gives is a patron submission, and therefore to be treated with great caution, in this instance it is correct, as the parish register entry reads:
[St John's Halifax Baptisms]
Feb
14  Wm  Jas: Womersley  Sm  Weaver
(William (son of) James Womersley, Southowram, weaver)

There is a very likely looking marriage at Halifax parish church on 27th January 1799, when James Womersley, a weaver of Southowram marries Hannah Mitchell, a spinster of Southowram. Neither party was able to sign, both making a mark. Witnesses were John Mitchell and John Kellett.
(There was another possible marriage of a James Womersley on 3rd November 1800, but that one was a wiredrawer from Hipperholm)
Regards,

Lesley
