Cool Cool Cool Thanks to you TB That is amazing you have produced the images I had been seeking on my Hawkes family. I love the old windows, and are they timber floors? Is this residential or business photrographs of a renovation?

Yes the floors are timber.  The ground and first floor comprise retail premises and are knocked through. The second floor is accessed through a hatch as the stairs have been removed.  This floor is largely untouched (shown in the pictures) and its not difficult to imagine what it would be like for your ancestors to live there.

TB

Those pictures are so cool, the windows are lovely, funny how there are none on the front of the building though.  Its brilliant that Jill gets to see the inside of the building.  Took a look at the place where the pub once stood and there is absolutely nothing original left of it.  Looks like they knocked it all down and reproduced the look.  It was where I thought where the shop River Island now stands.  Such a shame nothing left of it though.

Taken from the will of Thomas Hawkes, which I received on Friday it mentions items such as glasses, paintings, prints, musical instruments, ornaments, fire fenders, ash pans, clocks, breakfast, dinner, tea and bedroom services. It goes on to mention general day to day life goods and  utentils and then mentions chandeliers and the gas fiitings and meters. It also mentions all associated with casks, barrels, brewing equipment and glasses. A stable yard is also mentioned also with trade fixtures.
So this would be a good   inside view to the daily runnings of this familys livelihood in the 1860's.
Thomas finally sucumbed to TB in the latter part of 1862 and left a wife Ann Hawkes. Two young sons Thomas who died 1853 and William who died 1859 had died previous to their father. They are all buried within the Queen Street Cemetery,Walsall.

The three windows in the fourth picture are actually at the front of the building and are concealed behind the black and white timber cladding - you can see there locations outlined in the cladding on the second floor of the front elevation.

Hi

I am new to all of this but noticed your were researching my family - I am a from the John Hawkes/Mary Ann Davis line in Australia.  I know John was a convict and have all details on that.  I also have the birth certificate of his child born to his wife in Staffordsh*te - Jane Hawkins prior to his departure to Australia.  I am very keen to follow down his family tree in UK and happy to exchange what I have.

Thanks

Hi Jill

I am interested in your findings re the Hawkes Line.  Are you talking about a Thomas Hawkes ggrandfather of John Hawkes convict born 1817 ?

Thanks
