I just received info of this free site.Apologies if its been posted before, and please feel free to remove if its a duplicate, tabby
The Irish Family History Foundation's is pleased to announce that an Index to Griffith's Valuation is now available as part of its Online Research Service (ORS).
The Primary Valuation of Tenements, also known as Griffith's Valuation, was undertaken in order to establish the value of land and buildings in Ireland as a basis for levying a local system of taxation under the Irish Poor Law Act of 1838.
The Index to the Surnames in Griffith's/Primary Valuation of Tenements has been compiled showing the occurrence of surnames in each county on a barony/townland basis and the names of every occupier of land and property in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. This can be a useful indicator of the possible location of a particular family especially if the surname is an uncommon one. The original Valuation manuscripts are held in the National Archives of Ireland, Dublin, Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and the Valuation Office.

For more information see the FAQ entry
Yours sincerely IFHF

i was going to print it out when the topic reached page 20- so i only copied over the first few pages of links so the rest is lost unfortunately
By sheer good luck, I found I could look at and save the old Part One thread from 10 September 07 to 4th October 08, using Google search, as follows:
At Google search page, perform search for
what's free on the net migky january
then click on 'cached' option. You get a snapshot of the page as it appeared at 13/10/08, but you can't bookmark it of course because its gone. You can however save it as a text file, so you have the link addresses to copy/paste into your browser. Or print out (38 pages!) but I am doing this right now, just to be sure. Give it a try!
I was trying all sorts to try and get the whole thread - just 'what's free on the net' brought up all sorts of awful stuff. Adding 'Migky' brought it to Rootschat because of course there is only one Migky . then I added months of the year thinking I could get it page by page that way, but for some reason, adding 'january' got me the whole lot.
