Mystery woman! Alice ?Smith?
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 20:30 UTC (UK) »

hi, can anyone out there link an Alice to my great grandfather?

Our family belief of Alice was that she was Alice Smith from Hereford and my great grandfathers only full brother or sister, he had half brothers and sisters under the name of Williams but didn't have a strong bond as he did with Alice and used to write to her when he came to live in Swansea.

Here's what i have:
My great grandfather was Samuel J Smith b. Mansell Lacey, Hereford 1893.
1901
He is living with Samuel Sinnock and wife in Credenhill, no relation to these people is given or any mention of an Alice, but we have found out that Samuel Sinnock's wife Mary was the mother/ carer of his mother Ada Smith (nurse child)

His mother was Ada Violet Smith, was quite a mystery in her own right. She died in 1958 age 84 in Hereford making her being b.1873. Census tell us that she didn't have a recorded middle name Violet and was b. 1893 in Birmingham.
1901
She is a lodger in Staunton on wye, living with
Thomas Williams, head 60 b.Mansell Gamage
Arthur Williams, son b. staunton on wye (she married Arthur in 1901 and had many kids, half brother's and sister's of Samuel and we believe Alice)
Ann Jones lodger, 89 b. wormsley
William White lodger, 7 staunton on wye

1891
Ada Smith, 13, domestic servant for martha maton house b. Kinnersley

1881
Jos Smith 46 b. warwickshire
Mary Ann - 42 b. staunton on wye
Ada Lewis - 2 (Nurse Child) b. Birmingham

To this day we cannot find any link of Alice to our family, which is very frustrating as we know they used to regularly keep in touch. We also do not know who Ada Smith's/ Lewis birth parents are, or wether she was adopted.

Any help on finding any info on Ada would be great, but especially info on Alice or any possible links, as older people in the family actually saw her and remeber her.

Thanks. Smiley

Samuel's birth registration was under Weobley reg district

Assuming Alice was born in the same district - this could be her birth reg

Births June qtr 1897

Alice Smith   Weobly  6a 471

If you decide to send for a copy of her birth cert - put a condition on your application that her mothers name should be Ada.  If it's the wrong one, the GRO will only charge you a £3 search fee

Marriages December qtr 1901

SMITH  Ada Violet    Hereford  6a 1059
Williams  Arthur     Hereford  6a 1059

1881 has her as aged 2 and 1891 as 13 so birthyear around 1877/78.  Info on a death cert is dependant on the knowledge of the person reporting the death

A copy of her marriage cert may give a fathers name but don't be surprised if it shows Joseph

I suspect she was illegitimate and took on the Smith surname and the place in which they were living in 1881 as her birthplace of Kinnersley

but we have found out that Samuel Sinnock's wife Mary was the mother/ carer of his mother Ada Smith (nurse child)

In 1881 Ada Lewis/Smith is the nurse child of Joseph and Mary Ann Smith - Joseph was b Warwickshire which is interesting given that Ada is shown as b Birmingham on that census only - all others show Hereford (presume the 1911 shows Hereford??)

I think any connection to the Smith's could be via Joseph

There are 2 births in 1878 in Stratford for an Ada Violet Lucas but I think that could be clutching at straws.  One is with family in 1881 but can't find the other

In 1883, Mary Ann re-married to Joseph Sinnock

sorry, Ada's ment to be 1878 Embarrassed

thats brill!

we have Ada's marriage cert, her father is down as Samuel Sinnock.

it's weird how we can't find Alice living with them in 1901. And even worse with finding the parents of Ada Huh

Do you have the Williams family on the 1911 census - is Alice with them?

The free 1911 index shows an Alice Smith aged 14 living in Hereford

Ignore the entry for Alice Louisa Smith aged 15 as she was b Ledbury according to freebmd and also the one for Mabel Alice as she was b Bromyard per freebmd

hi carole,

I dont have the 1911 census but i have managed to do a quick search.

Apparently there is an Alice Smith living with a Thomas and Arthur Williams in Hereford 1911. she is born 1895 age 16.

2 freebmd searches show up.
Sep 1895 Alice Louisa Smith b. Ledbury 6a 475 (as i think you mentioned)
Dec 1895 Alice Smith b. Hereford 6a 432

the later sounds very promising, but i have not yet checked for deaths and cant find Ada with them on the quick search.

We know Ada married an Arthur Williams in 1901 and his father was Thomas Williams.

thanks pedro

A free 1911 index search does appear to show an Ada WILLIAMS (31) in the same household as an Alice SMITH in Hereford RD. Also an Arthur N WILLIAMS aged 16 and a Thomas WILLIAMS aged 45 each come up as sharing a household with an Alice SMITH in Hereford.

As always you can't be sure what's on there without buying a transcript or image!
