Nutcase trying to trace other related nutcases

If Silver was a surname, it could be the father's mum or grandmother's maiden name. So it could be a lot further back than your grandfather's time. I don't know about your family, but mine travelled around the counties a lot- some generations circled the whole of England it seems. My advice would be to track James back as far as you can get him and just keep going- it seems Silver is a name in the family so probably it has significance somewhere. In the course of your research you may eventually have a Silver jump out at you.
I suppose it might be possible that one of your ancestors might have worked with silver and gave a child that middle name because of it? It's usually a surname though. Of course, it might have no relevance at all.
Keep persevering.

My findings are the same as Jan. The ref. for the father James is RG13 1106 62 10 but what comes up is RG13 1195 60 6 and clearly the large family is spread over 2 pages.
I suggest you contact ancestry reporting this - tell them the correct references for James and Wilfred and then what pages actually come up. They will never know it's wrong unless someone tells them.

Three Brothers Knight out on the road...almost!

It looks as thought the whole district is digitised wrong...
I searched on another name on the page displayed and it appears to be 4 pages out. So you would need to go forward 4 pages from the one they show you. Unfortunately you run out of pages before you get to where you need to be. Just in case you don't have it..here they are in 1891..
Jas Silver age 35 born abt 1856 Where born: Odiham, Hampshire, England Address...near station, Winchfield, W Occupation: servant (can't read it very well)

James Silver Head M 45 Ganger (?) L.S.W.Ry Hants Odiham
Ganger is right. He would have been a foreman of the gang building/repairing the tracks.
Glad you have found the right census!

So where did you get that from? Presumably a different site - 1901censusonline.com?

No - findmypast (www.findmypast.com). I'm all for having back-up sources!
