Royal Irish Constabulary
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 10:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi all I wonder if anyone can tell me how old you had to be to join the R.I.C. My grandfather Patrick Mahon was a constable he was born in Sligo.  Would he have had to go to Dublin or Belfast to join up and for training or could he have joined from Sligo.thank you

Not sure if this answers your question but it does look intersting and has lots about R.I.C.:

if you can get it a great book is "The Royal Irish Constabulary" by Jim Herlihy .. gives lots of background, geared to ancestral research.

he says(p 77) in 1900 ... a candidate ... had to be ... unmarried, between 19 and 27 ...etc (sons of RIC men could join at 18)

as far as I recall, he also has published a complete index to the RIC - available in public libraries.

The records in National Archive Dublin (and in Kew, I think) give age, marriage date, fines and rewards, where stationed etc. most of my men joined locally, but couldn't serve in their (or their wife's ) native county

My husbands great grandfather was in the Dublin Metropolitan police and was from Roscommon. I`ve  had a quick read of the Jim Herlihy book as our local library was able to get a copy for us, (reference only). I remember it saying that you had to get a reference from the parish priest and then go to Dublin to do a training course.
