Alice Chapman
« on: Saturday 01 November 08 17:01 UTC (UK) »

I have records showing Alice Chapman married John Kellett (Kellott) on 18 feb 1817 in Staindrop. The parish records state she was of that parish but I cannot find her full birth details although I do know she was born around 1786.

There are two Chapman's, George and John who both married in staindrop in the preceding few years so I suspect her father is one of them but I don't have conclusive proof.

Anyone have any ideas.

Hi
Unfortunately "of this parish" only means at the time of the marriage not that she was born there - though the chances are high.  It may be worth extending your search to nearby parishes.  What did she call her children?   Often there are clues there.  Who were the witnesses on the marriage record?

Thanks

Unfortunately the record I have doesn't show witnesses and neither have I had any luck with tracing through ongoing family names.

Looks like this might be a dead end, although it is a side branch of the family I was hoping to push back a bit more.

Does that mean you do not have a copy of the original marriage entry?   Or that they did not have witnesses? That seems odd as they usually have - even if they are church wardens or something.   Might be worth getting the original if you do not have it.

The witnesses were Thomas Chapman & Robt Wilson. Robert Wilson is a serial witness so most likely not a relative. Thomas on the other hand could be her father or a brother.

This is from Staindrop's Bishops Transcripts, found here

Click on 'Europe' on the map & scroll down to Durham BT's ca 1700 - 1900
