Beginner looking for some help
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 16:50 UTC (UK) »

Am looking for any information on my grandmother.  Her name was Helen Bruce or Forbes and she was a domestic servant at Mains of Kair Fordoun in 1933.  On my fathers birth certificate she was described as 'Helen Bruce (formerly Forbes), Domestic Servant, (domicil Mains of Kair, Fordoun)', a description I find rather unusual, but can anyone help?  My father was born 06/11/33. His birth certificate states he was born at Woodend Hospital Aberdeen which seems strange if my grandmother was living in Fordoun at the time.  Thanks Denise

Hi Denise

As suggested on the other post by Trees, it would be worthwhile checking on your father's marriage cert. to see whether there is any new information on his mother Helen and a potential name for his father - by the sounds of it, his birth was illegitimate (?).

It is slightly misleading the way her name has been written up on his birth cert. Bruce formerly Forbes could mean that her maiden name was Bruce and she was previously married to a Forbes.  However I can't see a marriage between a Helen (searching for *el*en to pick up on variants) Bruce and a Forbes, except for one in 1904 which seems too early for her to be then having a child in 1933.

Now, in respect of the relation that brought up your father. Do you know what type of relation to his mother this was? If you know something about them, you could try tracing them in the hope of identifying the family of your gran. (You just have to be careful not to include names of any living people on this site).

I can only see one death showing for a Helen Bruce/Forbes and this was in 1975 in Angus, age 88 so born c. 1887. Again this age doesn't seem right to have had a child in 1933...
