Many thanks for your reply - and great memory!
I've been in contact with Bill Manktelow and exchanged some notes.
He has a very interesting page on Theresa Vowless - first Pakeha woman to set foot on shores of Waikato River at Hamilton!
Stephen had a brother Grove, and his (Stephen's) death notice shows him as Stephen William George Vowless so I think I'll stick with George meantime.
We've managed to trace back further on the Vowless side of the family - it being an unusual surname, but what I'm now trying to do is trace back Margaret Hunter - and there are many listed, so was hoping to get a clue to her parents from Marriage cert. The Sangster name is probably unusual, but I'm not sure where to start looking for her birth as have no idea of year, although if she was close to her husband's age it would be about 1833.

1893 electoral roll they are both in Masterton, Kuripuni,
So you would think Margaret was in the area when she died ..unless it was after Stephen and she moved ??to family
I can see how you have had some confusion even on later childrens schoolrecords the names interchange
eg Grove b 30/9/1888 parent sometimes George and other times Grove

Hi Christine
The only time a parents' name is shown on an ITM is if one of them is a minor, and they "give consent"

My family dates back in New Zealand to the 1850/60s ish. Theresa Vowless (who was told to have jumped off a boat and swam ashore) is my great great great great grandmother. She married some guy called Grove Vowless. i got all this info on her from old newspapers at the Waikato.

im a 13 year old, but it would be great to meet some of my extended family!!!! Theresa had about 5-8 children for memory. I did a school project on her. I have heaaps of info. If you genuinly think you are related to her or Grove Vowless, my email is (*), email me, and i will email back!

Hi there
i have just found out that i too am related to theresa vowless...
Walter coop married the sister of grove vowless - and i go from that tree.
If anyone has any pictures of theresa and her brothers and sisters - that would be awesome.
i would love to see also her husbands side - grove and his family - so if anyone has them of knows where to find them - that would be great.
Finding out about your past is so much fun - I love it ...
i did not know much about my dad's family until a week ago - now my eyes have been opened and it is really fun and interesting.
