Tracing the footsteps of my Forebears

Heaton / Ashton Families Ashton Under Lyne
« on: Monday 03 November 08 21:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi guys doing a search on my UK family History
My grandparents are

Joseph Heaton (senior) Born in UK in Ashton-under-Lyne 24th September 1903. Died 27th June 1968.
May Heaton (Nee Ashton) Born Ashton-under-Lyne 21st May 1909. Died 17th December 1973.

Jo senior had a sister, Marie Mcgarrie(McGarry) Not sure of spelling.
Jo senior took his mother's maiden name as she was not married and we always understood that his father was in The British army serving in India. He returned when your Grandfather was seven years old and married his mum. His name was never changed and there is some doubt that McGarry was his father . We don't know for sure now but he had his name-Jo.

Also Jo McGarry was born in Waterford, Ireland.

Can anyone help me with the history of all three families  much appreciated

I have family in the UK  That ask me for answers  and Im a first gen born aussie  thanks P J Heaton

This looks like the marriage of Joseph's mother, but her husband is Bartholomew, not Joseph:

Marriages Jun 1909
HEATON    Mary
McGARRY   Bartholomew
Ashton 8d 899

The following people seem to be living together in the same household in Ashton under Lyne on the 1911 census index:

Mary McGARY - 29
Joseph HEATON - 7
William HEATON - 55
Mary HEATON - 57
Maria HEATON - 18
William HEATON - 16

The full details are pay-to-view at http://fmpbsol.1911census.co.uk/

I'm not sure where Bartholomew McGarry is in 1911, but he and Mary had at least 3 more children - all info from Free BMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Bartholomew McGARRY (mother HEATON) - b. Dec Q 1912  (Ashton 8d 921)
Maria McGARRY (mother HEATON) - b. Sep Q 1914  (Ashton 8d 1042 )
Margaret McGARRY (mother HEATON) - b. Sep Q 1916  (Ashton 8d 792)

Bartholomew Jr died aged 2, Dec Q 1915.  (Ashton 8d 630)
Margaret died aged 0, Jun Q 1917.  (Ashton 8d 681)

Bartholomew Sr. died aged 33, Jun Q 1918.  (Ashton 8d 612)

Hi,

Bartholomews Military pensions record is on Ancestry.  He was discharged 15th December, 1914 aged 31. (Joined 1903) as medically unfit (He has T.B.)  He was born Tunstill, Staffordshire but when he enrolled he gave his next of kin as Mother Maria McGarry and brother John of 36 Cannon Street, Ashton under Lyne.    Later this was altered to Wife Mary.  He married Mary Heaton on 3rd April, 1909.  Two children were then added Maria born 4th September, 1914 and Bartholomew born 5th November, 1912.

On a later document a son Joseph born 1903 was added!!  Son Bartholomew was crossed out as having died in 1915.

Sorry, Ancestry just ceased up and I haven`t the time to go back and look for a while.

Regards,
Mo

I think this is probably May ASHTON on the 1911 index, but I don't have any credits to check the full details of the household:

Mrs Ellen ASHTON - 52
Arthur ASHTON - 25
Ernest ASHTON - 23
Janet ASHTON - 18
Nellie ASHTON - 15
Fred ASHTON - 11
May ASHTON - 2

"Mrs Ellen" could be mother or grandmother, I suppose.  Undecided

Ellen's family in 1901 - she was a widow, so probably May's gran?

RG13/3788 95 22 - 11 Angola St, Droylsden, Lancs
Ellen ASHTON - Head - Wid - 39 - Paddington, London
Herbert ASHTON - Son - 17 - Labourer at Jam Works - Denton, Lancs
Arthur ASHTON - Son - 14 - Nipper on Lorry - Droylsden, Lancs
Jessie ASHTON - Dau - 10 - Droylsden, Lancs
Janet ASHTON - Dau - 8 - Droylsden, Lancs
Nellie ASHTON - Dau - 6 - Droylsden, Lancs
Fred ASHTON - Son - 2 - Droylsden, Lancs

In 1891 the family is listed as ASHBURN - probably a copying error.

RG12/3283 58 25 - 107 Williamson St, Droylsden, Lancs
Albert ASHBURN - Head - 32 - General Labourer - Hollingwood, Cheshire
Ellen ASHBURN - Wife - 32 - Birmingham
Herbert ASHBURN - Son - 7 - Denton, Lancs
Arthur ASHBURN - Son - 4 - Droylsden, Lancs
Ernest ASHBURN - Son - 2 - Droylsden, Lancs
Jessie ASHBURN - Dau - 2 mo - Droylsden, Lancs
