SALTER Robert Henry 1890 - 1918 Exeter
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 01:36 UTC (UK) »

My grandmother Emily Salter 1892 Exeter had an older brother Robert Henry Salter1890 who married Harriet Stookes in 1912. They had children Thomas H 1913 and Robert 1915 but  Thomas (2) died in 1915 and Harriet (23) died in 1919 shortly after her husband  Robert Henry (28) in 1918. I would very much like to know what the cause of deaths were and what happened to the orphan Robert.

Hi Lynne

The only way to find out the cause of the deaths would be to purchase the death certificates

Hi Lynne
am new to rootschat. Saw your query on Robert Salter married to Harriet Stookes. Iam descended from Stookes stock and have info on Robert Salter. He was honourably discharged from the Devonshire 3rd Battalion M Company on 10/06/1916 after serving 1year and 11 days with the diagnosis of disseminated sclerosis , causation sclerosis of spinal cord. Medical report from Devonport Military Hospital : Private Robert Henry Salter age 29, enlisted 06/06/1915 at Exeter, address 35 Coombe Street, occupation fish hawker, married, two children. Discharge as permanently unfit, has never been able to do full duty, weakness of legs the chief cause of his incapacity. On examination, anaemia, weak, tendon reflexes abolished. Marked loss of sensation in legs and feet. Pupils do not react to light. Scar of old chancre on penis. Signed C.J.Cocke Medical Officer.
He had signed up before in 1914 and was honourably discharged after 41 days service "Not being likely to become an efficient soldier".
The chancre on his penis could have been from syphilis, many babies and toddlers died around that time having being infected by their mothers during birth, that could explain Thomas's death, and also the death of what was probably his first child. Harriet Stookes gave birth to a son Robert H. Stookes in 1912, birth and death registered in the first quarter of that year, she and Robert married in the 4th quarter of 1912. Hope this helps. By the way, on his Army records it states that he was 5foot 6inches, medium complexion, grey eyes and dark hair.
