Hi Hallmark On her marriage certificate 1923 it has her name as Mary Gowan and her father as John Gowan. She changed her religion to Roman Catholic so that she could marry my grandfather James Dunne and they where married in the Church of Kilnahue They had 3 children in a place called Moneycross Wexford I have got thier birth certificates and on all of them it has got her name as Mary Gowan. But then for some reason they moved to Arklow and that is where my mother was born. My mother never knew her mother she was told that her mother died after giving birth to her from T.B. When my mother tried to get a birth certificate to come to England in 1952 she was told that her birth had not been registered so she had to go to the church of St Peter in Arklow and get a baptism certificate and the strange thing is that on my mothers birth certificate her mothers name is down as Mary McGowan and James Dunne. the sponsors were Huge Delaney and Mary O'Reilly in 1930 but what is even stranger is last year I went to Arklow to get a copy of the baptism certificate and I had the old one with me to show them. when they looked in the book and found it 18 Feb 1930 my mother Brigid Dunne mother Maria McGowen father Jacobus Dunne sponsors Hugo Delaney and Julia O'Reilly The names had changed from the first certificate. I told them that the names were wrong and he said that they had been put down in Latin he checked the book and there was no other Brigid Dunne born on that day. The Reason for the wrong names might be because my mothers father was a seaman and might have been away when my mother was born and as they had only lived in Arklow a short time the sponsors would not have known them that well also if her mother died after giving birth to my mother there would have been no family there to give the right name. My mother was baptised the same day she was born. so at the moment it is all very confusing. thank you for your help Hallmark.
Regards Manus

I think that the Wesleyan Methodists had a congregation in Gorey. Not sure that the Presbyterians ever did.
Cheers,

Can't find a Gorey Presbyterian Church either but "Wexford [Presbyterian Church], now [c1982] linked with Enniscorthy and Gorey is one of the Presbyterian-Methodist arrangements."

Yes, that was the case then, but not now. The Presbyterians & Methodists in Enniscorthy split about 8 years ago and set up separate congregations again. I'm quite sure that there was never a Presbyterian congregation in Gorey, only a Methodist meetinghouse (which is still there).

Mark Hayden is your man. A nice guy and the Rector in Gorey. He wrote the book 'German Ribbon Bars' and another that I cannot think of. His email is (*) exchange the at for @ Regards. Tom.
