Tweedie of Dreva
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 15:52 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help me with finding a Tweedie of Dreva pedigree?

I'm interested in finding the offspring of
Elizabeth, Bettie, or Bethea, b. 3ist May, 1760, baptised 2nd August, 1760, m. 16th February, 1786, Thomas Tweedie of Patervan, Peebles, who died 2nd June, 1847. She died 5th August, 1845.

Many thanks for any leads.

Thank you for the census information.  Are all the children born in Patervan?

I have a Lawrence Tweedie, his death certificate, died Hawick 1879 aged 79 years shows Thomas Tweedie (deceased), farmer, as father, and Elizabeth Tweedie (deceased) maiden surname has a stroke through it.

I'm trying to find out if he is a child of Thomas and Elizabeth.

Very odd, but Lawrence's place of birth is shown as Linton Parish in censuses.  His marriage certificate shows Kelso as his place of birth: his wife' place of birth shown as Cairn Moor, Linton Parish. I am 100% convinced that the Registrar made a mistake here and transposed the places of birth.

It's certainly not far from Patervan to West Linton.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

The IGI has the following born to Thomas and Bethia Tweedie - all 'extracted '

1.  JAMES TWEEDIE Christening: 20 JUL 1795 Tweedsmuir, Peebles, Scotland
2.  ALEXANDER TWEEDIE  Christening: 14 NOV 1792 Tweedsmuir, Peebles, Scotland
3.  Adam TweedieChristening: 05 AUG 1791 Tweedsmuir, Peebles, Scotland
4.  THOMAS TWEEDIE Christening: 08 DEC 1788 Tweedsmuir, Peebles, Scotland
5.  JOHN TWEEDIE Christening: 29 NOV 1786 Tweedsmuir, Peebles, Scotland

Regards,   Steve   :O)

Note that slightly earlier in the late 1750's through to the 1770's there was a Thomas Tweedie and  a Jane Brown/Broun producing children in the same area - name picked up when I did a 'batch no. search'

Have just sent you a pm on IGI searching.....

Am out of SP credits, but a free search using the name Thomas Tweedie and first name Bethia only - brings up 5 hits.   You'll find earlier ones if you use the fathers name only, but I think this was the Thomas Tweedie and Jane Brown marriage.  You' also have to check using variants of Bethia on SP.

Hello - my last post on this thread  :O)  (Thanks for the pm).

Free SP search done - as I'm sure you have from 1553 to 1854 - -only one Lawrence/Laurance/Laurence Tweedie birth shows - in 1825

The IGI shows an 'extracted' entry  for this Laurence - ch.  28 Aug 1825 in West Linton, Peebles.  Parents Laurence Tweedie and Jean Affleck.

There is an 'extracted' marriage for this couple (with wife as Jane Afflect)on 14 Sept 1818, Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh.  There is also a 'wishful thinking, 'submitted'  marriage entry for the same couple in 1824 with the wife as Jean Affleck.

If 'your' Lawrence/Laurence etc doesn't fit in with the above there is a good chance that perhaps his marriage was never recorded or the family were not of the established church.  (Have seen the 2 'submitted' birth entries for a Lawrence in 1800 with the Kelso connection, but would treat them with suspicion

Good luck.  Regards,   Steve   :O)

On www.freecen.org.uk  there is only 1 Lawrence Tweedie showing - in Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Address: Townhead

I take it you have the will of Thomas.  On SP £5.00

Tweedie Thomas 11/07/1848 tenant of Patervan, afterwards residing in Crook Inventory, Settlement, Testament Testamentary Peebles Sheriff Court SC42/20/5

Regards,   Steve   :O)

If you search for Lawrence and variants from 1830 onwards you get a couple in the wills section, although it may be an idea to have a look for all Tweedie wills.  :O)

Thanks, Steve.

I have a copy of the will and see that Lawrence, merchant in Moffat, third surviving son of Thomas Tweedie died 2 June 1848, was left £50 in his will.

I suspect that this is 'my' Lawrence.

Hi.  Here is the information from Michael Forbes Tweedie's genealogy of Tweedies:

Thomas Tweedie of Patervan (the son of John Tweedie and Christian, daughter of Thomas Tweedie of Quarter) b. 23rd Dec 1760 d. 2nd June 1847: m. 16th February 1786 Elizabeth (Bettie or Bethea) daughter of Thomas Tweedie of Oliver and Jean Brown:  Their Issue:
1. John Tweedie, bap 29th November, 1786 d. 18th May 1846.  2. Thomas Tweedie of Patervan, bap. 8th Dec 1788 d, 22nd April 1877. 3. Adam Tweedie, bap. 5th August 1791.  4. Alexander Tweedie, bap 14th November 1792.  5. James Tweedie, bap 28th July 1795.  It then notes: Thomas Tweedie of Patervan, who d. 22nd April 1877 had issue, his grandson being John Tweedie resident in Glasgow in 1902, whose two sons are both also married there and have issue, but no particulars have been obtainable.

Hope this helps.

Hello Brenda

That helps a lot.

I got the will of the first mentioned Thomas Tweedie and there's a Lawrence mentioned in it as a son and I suspect he's 'my' Lawrence.

Best wishes
