1861/1871 Census Request - Madden/Jefferson
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 16:33 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Can anyone help to trace the following families please?

Charles Madden and Sarah McKie born c 1824 and son Daniel Madden born c 1849.

Alexander Jafferson or Jefferson and Eliza Dickenson or Wickenson born c 1824 and daughter Hannah Jefferson born c 1849. (The mother's name is not clear on Hannah's marriage certificate.)

Daniel married Hannah on 7/8/1871 in Glasgow and they were living at 42 Maitland Street, Glasgow.
Both Sarah McKie Madden and Alexander were deceased at the time of the marriage.

I cannot find birth records so I don't know where they were born in the UK.

Can anyone help?
Thanks

The 1881 Scottish census only has one Daniel and Hannah Madden but both are shown as b 1856 which would make them barely 15/16 when they married

Both were b Ireland and there is a James McKee (?? McKie) aged 35 also b Ireland shown as a lodger - address was 33 Albert St Govan

Did Daniel & Hannah have a daughter Elizabeth b Govan around 1873/74 - shown as aged 7 on the 1881

Not really - they may have lied to enable them to marry without parental consent.

Hi Carole

I know of two sisters of Daniel - Elizabeth and Catherine.
I had forgotten all about them - sorry!

I will try SP again to see if I can find a death certificate for this Daniel.
I have one for his son Daniel.
I am getting myself confused! Is this an occupational hazzard of family research?

I'm not sure whether you have your Daniel's mixed up.

Daniel jnr b 1885 Govan does not appear to have a sister Catherine - just Elizabeth

Daniel snr b 1849 Ireland may well have had a sister Catherine

I'm not sure whose death cert you already have - possibly Daniel snr?

In 1901 Daniel junior and his sister Ann (Annie) are living with married sister Elizabeth.  Surname is indexed as Maddin

125 Renfrew Road Govan

James B White 22 Portobella, Edinburgh Steam Engine Maker Iron Turner Fitter & Turner
Lizzie White 26 b Govan
Ann Maddin 18 b Govan sister in law
Daniel Maddin 16 b Govan brother in law app ship caulker
Govan; ED: 73; Page:  4; Line: 5

1901 - There is a Daniel Madden aged 52 b Ireland living at 25 Logie St Govan occ ship boilermaker but wife is Bridget b 1852 Ireland

I have re-checked the 1891 and there is no Daniel with a wife Bridget so I suspect Hannah died and he has re-married

I've still to get my head round all these names but Daniel Madden married Bridget Kenney on June 4th 1861.
Daniel is shown as a widower age 30, Bridget is a 22 yo spinster - occ hawker (Carol, I believe the hawker connection has come up before in one of your lines).
The address of both Daniel and Bridget is given as 65 or 68 Saltmarket, I seem to recall that address as well?

Both Daniel and Bridget are illiterate.  That combined with the fact that they are hawkers could explain any discrepancies in age.  I've been told by others researching families of hawkers that there can be quite extreme differences in ages from census to census, marriages and deaths.

I'll email a copy of the marriage to you.

Hi Dave

Quote
Daniel Madden married Bridget Kenney on June 4th 1861

Is this marriage connected to the Daniel Madden b 1849 Ireland -subject of this post?

That Daniel was married to Hannah up to and including the 1891 census

The 1861 marriage cannot be him as he was too young (b 1849) and cannot be his father as he was called Charles?

The 1901 entry I found cannot be connected to this marriage either as that Daniel was b 1849 and Bridget 1852

Hi Carole and Dave

I will have to write all this down and have a study at it.
Then I will show it to my mum in law and see if it jogs any memories.

I will get back to you with any new info, if any!

Thank you so much for what you have found so far

Hi

I have made a wee bit of progress.

I have found Hannah Madden's death - 21/2/1897 in Govan, Glasgow and daughter Lizzie's marriage to James White - 22/4/1898 again in Govan.

I may have Lizzies birth but I have still to check that.

Hannah's mother is Elizabeth Wilkinson - the name is clear on the death certificate.

Still no luck with a death for Daniel c1849 though.

Have you checked for Daniel's re-marriage to Bridget between 1897 - 1901?

Have you checked for a death post-1901 as he was alive on the 1901 census

Hi Carole

I still can't find a death for Daniel c1849 in SP or family search.  I tried under Scot/Eng/Ireland with no luck.  There must be a record somewhere  Sad

I looked at the marriage for Daniel and Bridget that Dave sent but they married in 1861 and Daniel's parents are different so this can't be my Daniel.

I think I will rename him the Scarlet Pimpernel!
