Nixon
« on: Friday 07 November 08 20:12 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for info on my Grandfather who came from Tobermoney Ireland.  He came to Canada around 1913.  His name was James Wilfred (Wilford) Nixon, he had a brother William and a sister Maggie.  His parents names were John and Elizabeth.  James was born around 1888.  Some family still resides around Killyleagh but they don't seem to know very much about their family.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Killyleagh and Tobermoney  are not close. How do you know the Killyleagh line connect to your family line?
Tobermoney is in the civil parish of Downe it’s the last townland going SE of Downpatrick towards Ardglass.  Killyleagh is north of Downpatrick, say half way to Comber.

one resource that might help on the migration is www.findmypast.com/passengerList.  It’s a fee paying site.  here are just some who travelled to Canada

Thank you Jim for the information.
My grandfather wrote to his brother william and his family and when my mother found some of the letters later on she wrote and they were forwarded to killyleagh.  My grandfather listed his town as Tobermoney on his war records, so I don't know if the family lived there when they were young and then moved to Killyleagh later on.
Do you happen to know the name of the ship that the James Nixon born 1888 from Glasgow to Halifax was.
Thank you again for the help

aje, no sorry thats the catch for fee paying at find my past, but probably there are others ways of finding eg try the canada page on this website asking for help identifying the ship, good luck,

So William Nixon stayed on possible already in Killyleagh or moved to there later, so i went looking for him, and through him find the parents link etc etc
from signatories of the 1912 Ulster covenant on  www. proni.gov.uk/UlsterCovenant
Nixon William John Killyleagh  Down: East Killyleagh Cook Hall but there may be more eg
Nixon Ellen Jane Sea View Killyleagh Down: East Killyleagh Cook Hall
I also noticed more Nixon that are living at Listooder in Crossgar area. I wonder how close Listooder and Killyleagh are on a map.

That William John reminded me to look back a same named on Ros Davies website, which was
William John NIXON . Magheradrool b. 1854, son of John Nixon (a labourer); married Maggie Bell in 1879 at 1st Holywood Presbyterian Church; a carpenter  PR . I think this me introducing a red herring, and move on

I am looking around further and may come back with something

A little more information that I have is that my grandfathers brother William married a Lizzie Delmont and they had 5 children Lily, Mae, Sadie, Jim and David some of which lived in England and Glasgow.  I don't have a year that they got married.  Then on Oct. 31, 1936 William married Evelyn Fee and they had 3 children Wilby, Margaret and Alex all born in Ireland.  I have been in contact with them and they don't know a lot about their family because their father died when they were young.  William died in 1959 and Evelyn died in 1974.

We visited Ireland in July and checked out the cemetaries around Ballee and Bright area and couldn't find anything.  In Ballee we found a headstone that said John Nixon and family but could not find anything to prove who it belonged to.  What a beautiful country.

I'm hoping to find out a little more about William's first family.
