McClellan in Bankend 1680
« on: Saturday 08 November 08 17:30 UTC (UK) »

Help needed by McClellan researchers, please Huh The 1680 Testament of John McMurrie in Airds has several references to, and is signed by "Laird" John McClellan in Bankend. Since John McClellan, 3rd Lord Kirkcudbright died in 1664, and was succeeded by William McClellan, I am hoping that somebody can throw some light on this subject. Was John McClellan perhaps the son of William? Was he a brother of Robert McClellan below?

I am trying to find a link to Robert McClellan (b.1716 Kirkcudbright -d. 1789 Salem NY), married 1754 Kirkcudbright to Nicholas Gordon (1730 Buittle -1799 NY). Nicholas Gordon was previously married 14 Nov 1751 to Alexander McClune (b. 1726 d. 1751 buried Old Dunrod Kirkyard).  I have come across several trees that document Robert McClellan and Nicholas Gordon's line in America, but they make no reference to Nicholas' previous marriage to Alexander McClune. He must have died very shortly after the marriage.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

For anybody interested, I have since received the following information about John McClellan. He was of Bank, also known as Balfeir/Balseir prior to the 17th century. Bank was in the parish of Dunrod. In March 1669 he had sasine of the lands of Airds, and in December 1669 he was followed by his son William. In 1680 he was baron of the barony of Dundrennan, and was appointed stewart depute for Kikrcudbright in 1690. He died before 20 Feb 1713.

John McClellan married twice; first to Margaret Lennox, relict of David Shenan in Culquha, daughter of Robert Lennox in Irelandton; and then to Helen Gordon, relict of Charles Telfer in Linkings (Linkens). John and Margaret Lennox had children:

William McClellan of Bank
Robert McClellan of Bank
Samuel McClellan, dyer in Dumfries
Margaret McClellan, married James McClellan, chirugeon burgess of Kirkcudbright.

I know this is "old stuff", but one never knows who might stumble across this and find it useful Smiley
