I am looking for details of William Barnes and Elizabeth.
The only information I have on them is that they had a daughter Ann Barnes who was baptised in Ardeley on 18th Feb 1753.
Is it possible to find out any further information on them?
Kind regards

Have you tried Hertfordshire Record Office online search index which includes a marriage index 1538-1837? If not I'd try a search for William and Elizabeth' marriage. You will need to experiment with different spellings.
http://www.hertsdirect.org/libsleisure/heritage1/HALS/indexes/
Then at least you'd know whether you might have to look further a field than Hertfordshire.

Yes, I have tried to search for William Barnes married from 1740 ton 1755 and nothing.
I can't find any brothers and sisters for Ann Barnes, absolutely nothing.
So frustrating

All the other Barnes baptisms in the Ardeley parish register between 1756 and 1769 are for parents John Barnes and Elizabeth. I would check the baptism register and if it survives the Bishop's Transcripts for 1753 to see if this is an incorrect transcription or a mistake in the register and the father's name should be John. You should also search Ardeley burial register to try to confirm whether there was more than one couple who remained in the village. Who were the witnesses on Ann's marriage to James Seal?

Thanks, do you mean by 'bishops transcript' the baptism of Ann Barnes, as I do have a copy of that, I also have a copy of the marriage licence between James Sale and Ann Barnes, which makes very interesting reading but gives no further clues.
This is what the marriage reads: Ann was a spintser of the parish, married by licence, signed by the ‘mark’ of both James Seal and Ann Barnes- in the preference of Henry Star ‘mark’ and of Thomas Parker.
Henry Star is also mentioned in the marriage licence.
Kind regards

the definition for Bishop Transcripts (taken from Wolverhampton Archives service - first one popping up on Google)
'Bishops' Transcripts
'These were ordered to be kept from 1598 when the clergy were required, within a month of Easter, to send transcripts of the registers for the previous year to the bishop of their diocese. After 1837, when civil registration started, many clergy ceased to send copies, although some did continue for quite some time.
Bishops' Transcripts (BTs) are useful in that they provide a second record and may have survived when the parish register has not. Details of baptisms, marriages and burials were also sometimes recorded on loose sheets prior to copying into the registers, and it is possible that some BTs may include entries not listed in the parish registers.'

The other Barnes baptisms
JAMES BARNES Christening: 29 FEB 1756 Ardeley, Hertford Father: JOHN BARNES Mother: ELIZABETH
ELIZABETH BARNES Christening: 19 JUN 1757 Ardeley, Hertford Father: JOHN BARNES Mother: ELIZABETH
EDWARD BARNES Christening: 04 MAR 1759 Ardeley, Hertford Father: JOHN BARNES Mother: ELIZ.
ELIZABETH BARNES Christening: 10 OCT 1762 Ardeley, Hertford Father: JOHN BARNES Mother: ELIZABETH
HENRY BARNES Christening: 10 JUN 1764 Ardeley, Hertford Father: JOHN BARNES Mother: ELIZTH.
JUDITH BARNES Christening: 30 JUL 1769 Ardeley, Hertford Burial: 02 APR 1770 Father: JOHN BARNES Mother: ELIZTH.
If John is not the same man he may be William's brother. Either way you need to search Ardeley burial register to see if both men appear there.
Since James Seal and Ann Barnes married by licence it might be worth checking with Hertfordshire Record Office to see if there are any Barnes wills for Ardeley.
