I know this is a long way back and just might be a coincidence, but found the following marriage on Boyds index.

Just a thought  Wink

Do you have the christening of William Bilney Commonly called Whiting ?

I have seen names written thus in documents where the child is born before the parents married, so the child is born with the mother's maiden name.

Then the parents get around to marrying and he becomes known by the father's name.

There is a whole branch of Bridges family originating in Athelington Suffolk - we were contacted by a descendant about 25 years ago (yes, my husband and I have been at this lark for a very long time)  Roll Eyes

It turned out that the original John Bridges of this family was the first child born to Mr Hawes, mother's maiden name was Bridges.
After the birth of John the parents married and all the other children born to this couple were baptised Hawes - but first child was always known as Bridges.

As I say, just a thought

Another reason why this one caught my attention, Bilney is a name I often see when looking through PRs for Framlingham.

I have to look up something for my husband so will check to see if any mention of your William too  Grin

Hi Danuella

Where are you located?? I am currently researching this family and have also been intrigued by the Whiting connection.

I had gone as far back as Henry Bilner born c. 1813 Helmingham. I found his baptism record (23 May 1813), son of William and Lydia Bilney. Also in the Helmingham Parish Register for 1797 is a baptism:

1797 Lydia, the daughter of William Whiteing and Lydia his wife, late Lydia Wright spinster was born Nov 27, 1797 baptized publicly Dec 24 1797.

You stated you've seen William's marriage record in 1796, Helmingham. What was his wife's name? That doesn't tie in with Lydia Whiting being born in 1797 though!!

Henry Bilner's son Edgar was listed as Edgar Whiting in the 1881 census but as Bilner (or variants) in the other censuses.  Have you also come across the following Helmingham Burials:

Eliza Billiner (alias Whiting) 8 Feb 1859, age 24,
Maria Billiner (Whiting) 10 May 1851, Infant
Charles Bilner (alias Whiting) 8 Oct 1875, age 70
John Bloomfield Bilner (alias Whiting) 2 Feb 1880, age 26
and, of course, William Bilney (commonly called Whiting) 21 Apr 1849, age 82, abode, Barham Work House

I notice that William was 82 in 1849, therefore born c. 1767

I also saw Lidia Bilner in the 1841 census in Helmingham, age 60 (which could mean any age 60-64), in which case, she would have been born c. 1767-1781) which again doesn't tie in with Lydia Whiting baptized in 1797.
