Many thanks for reply.  I managed to get back to Charles Dickinson born 1805 in Wigan...that wasnt too difficult!!  I am now in the process of tracing his father Thomas Dickinson. I know he married Ellen Holt in 1797 at Wigan and through this site I think he was christened in Upholland  around 1776. The archivist at Wigan is actually doing a search for me on that. Through the IGI it tells me that his father was John whose father was William whose father ws Samuel.  This is all assuming I have the correct Thomas in the first place, but I am fairly sure it is!!

I now need to put some meat on the bare bones and if you can help me I would be most grateful. As I live in Suffolk it is not easy to get to Wigan all that often. Are there any resources I can use up here that would help me?
I apologise for the length of the reply.

Dear Judith,

It sounds like you are doing very well with your research you must be very pleased Smiley

We currently have links listed under Lancashire, as it has been quite busy you have to go to the early pages to see  Roll Eyes them.

There are more general links for the whole Country under Beginners and also England with the busiest being FreeBMD with records from 1837 onwards, you may find some deaths which might help. This however is an ongoing project being done by volunteers.

I had some success with Wills, this site gets very busy but will tell you more.

Do you have trades for your Dickenson men ? If so you could also try browsing the historical Directories which you will find a link under beginners.

Hope this helps

Hi,
I am trying to find relatives of Janet DICKINSON born c 1870 in the Pilling area. She and her brother where orphaned when their mother died, the father was believed to have gone away to sea and never returned.
They lived with relatives, possibly named WILKINSON as she names John WILKINSON as her father on her wedding certificate.
If any of this sounds familiar I would love to hear from you!
Thanks
John
