Anyone got any ideas as to whether or not there may be an archive where beerkeepers/innkeepers records may be held.
My Gt Grandparents were the keepers of a pub called the Three Pidgeons in Oswestry, Shropshire from 1902 - 1913 and I wondered if records/photo's of publicans were kept/stored anywhere.
I managed to visit the pub a few years ago but unfortunately the landlord at the time was unable to help much.
I have no photo's of my Gt Grandparents and was hoping there may have been a picture taken during their occupation of the pub.
A relative suggested that I contact the Licensed Victuallers Association to see if they know of a central office which may hold records of Pubs & Landlords from the past.
Does anyone know if this is likely? I feel it's a bit of a long shot but then again, maybe not ?
the idea of selling beer from houses etc, was to stop the unruly mob in the streets drinkign whenever they liked, but you had to aply for a licence to sell the beer (like you do nowdays) this licence was issued by the local magistrates and as Tony said the records should be held in the tr sessions at the local RO however they may be at TNA or failing that it was often advertised in the local newspaper.
