Quoting from PMs
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 14:36 UTC (UK) »

I was shocked to see in a recent thread that the prohibition on quoting from Personal Messages includes one’s own PMs.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,340025.0.html

Can this possibly be true?  If so, I have violated the rule any number of times.  Why on earth should I be expected to rework or paraphrase my own writing?  If I think my own words, used in a PM, could be usefully transplanted to a public forum, why am I prohibited from cutting and pasting them?  Or is it OK to do so as long as I don’t mention that the words were originally used in a PM to member XXX?

If for no other reason consider the etiquette involved.

Many PM's form part of a conversation between at least two people and while it is technically easy to "cut and paste" from such a set of messages this could at the very least distort the whole meaning behind the original texts.

There have been instances before where segments of PM's have been quoted by one of the parties involved and used completely out of context to give a totally different meaning to that intended.

Surely I would be the best one to judge whether I am taking my own words out of context.  For that matter, it sems to me that I should be able to use my words in any context I want.

You could take whatever words you wish to emphasise your own point of view which may or may not be the correct one but it is your viewpoint and while in the majority of instances the meanings are well intentioned a minority who have other aims can distort those same words.

Although an extreme example - look at the christian churches . They all work ostensibly from the same words but all manage to take a different meaning from them.

I'm afraid I don't understand your point.

Language is one of man's most powerful weapons and the words which we use can be interpreted in a number of fashions and often to suit ones own interpretation.

If you decided to quote from your own side of a private conversation it would normally be to support or emphasise your own position and would not give any balance.

However in this instance there are other factors to consider.

1. RC Admin has ruled that quoting from PM's is against the terms of usage of RC - so that makes it a no brainer
2. The rules of Netiquette have also considered the posting of personal or private messages on open boards or forums as at the very least bad manners and it is generally frowned upon and in a few  forums that I am aware of - grounds for expulsion.

No brainer?  Thank you very much.

Perhaps a moderator will step in and answer this question in a more intelligible way.

But it isnt those sort of things that would be quoted ..... its facts, not snippets of gossip I'd be thinking about. So sorry, 'no brainer'* or not, its my work and probably my copyright.

I'd better stop there.... to avoid grounds for expulsion .....

No Brainer - The term is often applied to decisions which are straightforward.

My view is that  if you decide to post your own message for a wider audience, then there's no problem as long as you post it as a new message and not a quote from your PM.

I can think of a few examples of this.  For example, if you sent me the first posting on this thread and asked me to read it to see if it made sense or if you wrote to someone who you were helping on a thread and then thought that it would be more relevant on the thread, etc.

I don't think it is ethical to quote from someone else's PM though.

Now that's a no brainer.  In fact, it's a "strange loop."

Yes, Gadget, that's what I'm trying to get at.  Is it allowed?

Don't know Erato but  I can't see that it wouldn't be as long as you present it as a new message and the person that you've sent it to for checking or whatever agrees to it but maybe a Mod could clarify.

I have sent drafts of messages to the CE before now to see if the message was appropriate.

Well let's say that I wrote you a PM expressing some idea or opinion of my own.  Then later I thought it would be useful to express that same idea or opinion to a wider audience.  Why would I need your permission to do so?  I can see why I need your permission to drag you into it, but if I make no reference to the fact that I originally sent this to you as a PM, then where's the problem?

I don't see it as a problem as long as it is not put up as a quote from a PM but as a new message.
