Tracing My Family Doe
« on: Wednesday 12 November 08 20:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I was bought up in Owlsmoor near Sandhurst Surrey.  My Late Dad was James Derek Doe.  His mother was Violet May Rumbold.  My Dads Dad was named James Henry Doe, he nearly survived the war but was killed by the Japs.  At this point on my family name the story goes cold.  But I am fairly sure his Father was a Charles Doe born C1888 and he married or was with a Lily Green C1887.

Charles had 1 brother, Cairns born C1895 and 4 sisters, lucy C1883, Mary C1890, laura 1892-1971 and Victoria C1901.

Their parents were James Doe C 1855 and Laura C 1863.

I am desperate to find out my 'DOE' line of ancestry.  I have found out lots about the rest but not too much about my late Father & Grandfather's family line.  I have heard that the Doe's were originally a Romany family?  Coincidently I was bought up in Owlsmoor?  I was once told about a woman called Granny Doe who took in men of the road?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks  Jim Doe

Welcome to rootschat, Jim.

You say you are 'fairly sure' re Charles and Lily but it would be best to check this with your grandfather's birth certificate then at least you know you are on the right track.

James, Laura and the children are in 1901 census at RG13; Piece: 1142; Folio: 96; Page: 7 - which I assume you have. They are here in 1891 RG12; Piece: 988; Folio 80; Page 7

Free BMD has this possible marriage: December quarter 1882 , Bradfield - James Doe and Laura Tigwell.

I think this is James in 1881 with mother, Sarah at  RG11; Piece: 1298; Folio: 123; Page: 2 although the age is out a bit.

1871 RG10; Piece: 1276; Folio: 127; Page: 9

Common, Padworth

Joshua Doe 50 yrs ag lab b Ufton
Sarah 50 yrs b Hants Sherfield
James 16 yrs b Berks Padworth
Maria niece 4 yrs  b Padworth
Lydia Nash daur married 26 yrs b Padworth
Charles grandson 2 yrs b Padworth

If this is the information you seek- I hope it helps. I can look for earlier censuses too if you need them.
There is a marriage on Free BMD March 1841 Bradfield Joshua Doe and Sarah Bennet.

best wishes

Wow, thankyou so much Heywood.  I have my grandfathers birth certificate and this is where I got my first leed from.  Where do you get the census details from? I.E. 'James, Laura and the children are in 1901 census at RG13; Piece: 1142; Folio: 96; Page: 7 - which I assume you have. They are here in 1891 RG12; Piece: 988; Folio 80; Page 7'.

I am a bit clueless with all this and your guidance would be most appreciated.  Also what does 'Free BMD' mean?  Sorry to seem so dim but I am new to this.

Many thanks again

Best regards

Jim

Hi again Jim,
so glad that they are of use to you.

Censuses:
As you had the names and ages of the children, I thought that you may have had them from the 1901 census. I subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk so that gives me access to the censuses. There are other sites which also give access on subscription.

This site: http://www.1901censusonline.com/ has searchable indexes for most census years but again you have to pay for the details.

The 1881 census can be viewed freely at : http://www.ancestry.co.uk/
or http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

The Family Search site also has a section: International Genealogical Index (IGI) just click on 'search records' and it will come up in a list on left side. This has some church records BUT always check where the information comes from- if it is extracted from church records then that's fairly safe- if it is submitted you should always check because it means that someone has submitted as part of their family history and sometimes it could be hearsay.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ has inexes to registers 1837 onwards for Births, Marriages and Deaths - these are only partial indexes - it tells you on the site which years they go up to.

I will post the 1901 census details next.

This is the reference:
1901 RG13; Piece: 1142; Folio: 96; Page: 7

Little New farm Sulhampstead Abbots Berkshire

James Doe head 44 yrs general labourer b Berks Padworth
Laura wife 38 yrs b Berks Ufton
Charles son 13 yrs b Berks Ufton
Mary daur 11 yrs b Berks Ufton
Laura daur 8 yrs b Sulhamstead
Cains W G son 6 yrs  b -Sulhamstead
Victoria L daur 3 months b Sullhamstead

it has been transcribed as Cains and looks like that- have looked on Free BMD but can't find a birth registration to check the spelling.

If you need anymore census details just ask.

good luck

Hi Scottgirl

Do you have the marriage cert of Ocean Doe and Arthur James? If you're able to give me her father's name and marriage year, I may have some information to help you. I think she may be connected with my Draper family.

Best wishes

Hi Scottgirl

If she's the Ocean I think she is, her father was Golias or Gallius Doe and her mother Mary Ann Draper. Ocean is to found in records under both surnames. This may be her marrying Arthur/Alfred James, with her surname given as Draper:

DRAPER Ocean
m ALFRED JAMES
December Qtr 1915, Croydon RD

On the same index page on Ancestry, there's also a Phoebe James and a Charles H Scott marrying in the same quarter, same registration district. So it would be interesting to see if it's a double marriage.

And here is your Ocean's birth, this time under the surname Doe, from a birth certificate obtained by a Doe researcher Steve Doe:

DOE Ocean
Born 26 February 1867, Pudding Hill, Baughurst, Hampshire, daughter of GALLIUS DOE and MARY ANN HUMPHREY, Basket Maker; registered 4 March 1867 [Kingsclere Registration District]

Confusingly here, Mary Ann's surname is given as Humphrey here but she generally used the name Draper, her mother being Sibireni Draper and her father - reputedly - being a Joe Humphrey. (That info comes from the Draper notes in the Gypsy Collections at Liverpool University.)

If the marriage above is your Ocean, then it would suggest that she married Arthur/Alfred James at age 48, meaning that she had her children with him prior to tying a knot in church. I have come across similar instances in south country Gypsies who were persuaded to marry in old age by a well-meaning clergyman after they had spent a lifetime together.

Happy to give you the census references for Ocean and her parents if you don't have them.

I'd be interested to have Ocean's date of death and place of burial to add to my Draper database, if you'd be kind enough to share it.

Best wishes

Sharon

Hi Scottgirl

Yes - my Drapers are from Hertfordshire but I've also done a lot of research on the name in Hampshire and surrounding counties - and in fact throughout the UK.

I'll send the census info in my next mail - and look forward to hearing more about Ocean. Great photo too.

Best wishes

Hi Scottgirl,

I have been tracing my family, my great grandparents were Joseph and Becky James. The 1891 census shows a group of James that look likely, one of them being Joseph James and another listed as Alfred born in Adlow kent.

The 1901 census shows Alfred and Ocean James in Ilford whith children. Ocean says here she was born in maidstone.

I have a copy of the 1911 census and it shows them living in 35 Queens road mitcham. Children listed as follows: Mary Ann, Phoebe, Henry, Bill, John, Veverty(?).
Alfred is listed as Arther - profession greengrocer. He still lists his birth as Adlow kent instead of Hadlow. Ocean lists her birth as Basingstoke.

My great grandparents Joe and becky along with my grandmother vertina lived at no 18 Queens road mitcham. So I expect they are related.

I think you mention someone called Dolley. Well Ocean had a sister who in one census is listed as Dolley later Draper and possibly called Patience in an earlier census.
Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi Scottgirl,
regarding Ocean and Arther, do you have any clues about arthurs family. I am trying to confirm that he might be the brother of joseph and a few others, I think his parents might have been John and Elizabeth. What do you think,
