Hello, My g-g-grandmother has her place of birth on my g-gfather's birth certificate as 'thornliebank, Scotland'. I have found another record that may be her but it is from 'West or Old Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland'. Do you think they could be the same person?? The dates match but I'm not sure about geography. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Velly
No they are not same place. Thornliebank is near Glasgow (these days classed I think as East Renfewshire). Greenock is about 20 miles away and in Renfrewshire but on the Clyde coast.
What may be clouding the issue is as often happens folks put down the place they lived (happens a lot on census where places of birth change from one to the next) which makes it very difficult to pinpoint exactly where they were from.
If you can give names and dates etc we can have a look for you and try and find her.
Best wishes
Ann

Hi Ann,Thank you for your reply. Although they are different places I think I am onto the same person. I'll lay out my reasoning and see if you agree - because I'd hate to be suffering from good old wishful thinking! My g-grfther is George Martin Gordon - his parents Mary Russell (Thornliebank Scotland) and John Thomas Gordon (Glasgow, Scotland) - they married in NZ.Now, based on her age at the time of George Martin's birth - her birth year would be around 1841. Through FamilySearch there is a record for a Mary Russell born 7 Feb 1841 West of Old Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland - parents George Russell and Janet Stewart. Further records through Scotland's People show her born January 25 1841 and baptised 7th February. Now, the dates fit. And in addition, my grandfather's name was George Russell too. This George Russell is George Martin's son.If you're not completely confused , do you think that stacks up? Or will I need to see her NZ death certificate before I can be sure (by getting the names of her parents)...

Hi Velly George Russell and Janet Stewart there are two marriages on IGI one for 1807 in Edinburgh and one 1837 in Greenock there are a few births on IGI too for the George and Janet Russell including Mary born 1841 if you check for their marriages on Scotlands people you may get some more info from them Elaine

Hi velly
It's a difficult one. Stewarts and Russells abound in Scotland - I have quite a few myself and allowing for different spellings of both names can be hard to match .
Looking at Scotland's People I can see there are 8 Mary Russell's baptised in Scotland in 1841including the one in Greenock you have mentioned. There is only one however in the Glasgow area :
Baptised 06/11/1841 RUSSELL MARY MCFARLANE Parents JOHN RUSSELL/CATHERINE KERR (She is their second child ) Parish Barony GLASGOW CITY/LANARK GROS Ref 622/ 0110 0296 .
I think I would get hold of the death certificate and verify her parents names first.
Best wishes
Ann

Thanks Irene. I was waiting on Mary Russell's marriage cert from NZ hoping it would list her parents - but there's nothing on it. Will now have to get her death cert and hope that offers more info. What you found in the thornliebank census would put her at the right age though - so that's encouraging... Thanks Irene.

Regarding Thornliebank it may be significant to mention that this was a substantial textile works, and there would have been a considerable flux of population into and out of the factories. Commenced in 1778, there were major changes to the activities in the 1850s when the cotton mill discontinued and printing took over, and there was also a progressive shift from skilled craftmen to predominantly operatives as technology changed. So people came and went pretty regularly. Sometimes in the census families forget where the children were born, being less able to say accurately whether born before or after arriving at a mill.
