Norwegians in Portishead
« on: Friday 14 November 08 10:46 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information, photographs regarding Norwegians who established the Mustad nail factory in Portishead in 1911. I am descended on my father's side from The Svendsen family and am also related to the Berg family on my mother's side.

Other surnames of interest: Olsen, Carlsen, Christiansen

Hello John,
I am an englishman working in Oslo and I had a collection of old postcards of Portishead that I bought in Norway a few years ago, and have just listed on ebay UK today. One of them is of the Mustad Nail Factory and I was doing some research on this and noticed your note. I can see now how they arrived in Norway! One of them is addressed to O Mustad & Sons Bergen. I have attached a scan of the Nail Factory postcard in case you are interested in seeing it. Steve

thanks so much for the picture. Is the date of the card 1912? and do you know who sent it?

Hello, Yes the date of the postcard is 1912. I have attached another postcard from the same collection and this is addressed to Trygun Bolstad at Mustad & Sons Bergen and this is the same name as was written on the earlier card. I am unsure who sent it though. Regards, Steve

Steve,

thanks again, the images on both these cards are new to me. It seems like Trygve was part of the first wave of norwegians who came to establish the factory. He then returned to Bergen. My great grandfather was part of that first wave. he stayed on; he died in 1947 in Portishead, but was also posted to Italy (Torino) and Spain in the 1920's

thanks agian

Steve,

the postcard was sent by Daisy... she was Valencia Daisy Hazell the wife of Trygve Bolstad. They married in 1912 and had at least 2 sons Torgeir and Kare b 1913, 1917 respectively.

she was the daughter of Charles Hazell; a retired soldier.

Steve,

I have now found a living relative of this couple and some photos of the correspondents. I wonder whether they may be interested in purchasing your postcards?

John,

Interesting information! It is always fascinating to put names to postcards from so long ago.

The postcards are currently listed on ebay with a closing bid date in 5 days so they are more then welcome to bid for them!

You can see them at: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/sallen1960 if you want to check out the other images.

Regards

Hello again, I just looked at another postcard in the collection that I listed - of the pier at Weston Super Mare and I saw that it was addressed to Daisy from Trygve. Your suggestion was perfect! A copy attached. Regards Steve
