Hello, I found one of my ancestors a 66 yr. old widow whose occupation was registered as annuitant, I know that the French word annuité means an annual instalment. Any help on this one!! She was from Wigtown  Regards.....Alex

I was told that it meant they received an annual payment,eg.a pension.Have you found her in a census? You may find out what type of employment she was in in her earlier years.

flst is right - usually these would be comparatively modest sums - as opposed to some who are shown on the census as being of independent means (ie they were comparatively well-off)

It's simply another word for a pensioner.
Depending on the era, she will have been receiving money from a trust left after the death of her husband or another relative.

I agree flst, I'd just typed the above but you posted first.

Hello, Thank you all for your kind replies, well Esther Marshall (the lady in question) was the daughter of a farm labourer, she married a farm labourer, so no pension funds there! She bore 10 children in 20 years and died in 1899 aged 84 maybe the kids were helping her out!! I'll dig around a bit more.   Regards......Alex

I'm guessing now.  I wonder whether she lived in a "tied" property and the annuity was life time tenancy of the property?
