I am in conact with Charles Dorian a descendant
of Thrifts second wife in the states.

It's a small world. Charles Dorian's daughter-in-law is my 4th cousin!

Charles Dorian is my third cousin, so I suppose that means you and I are related (however remotely) through marriage.

It is indeed a small world ! !

Hi Jim,

I moved my family outside Vancouver in 1975.
before that we lived 5 years in  Herts. and two years before that ion  Lanarkshire. I grew up in the Borders around Kelso Galashiels. Wife  is frim Gordon Berwickshire.

Thrift Watt died 17 Mar 1919  Balnillo, Dun, Forfar, Scotland
he is buried in Dun churchyard grave has no memorial.

His death was registered by a farm worker or neighbour
even although his daughter Isabella lived at 80 Baltic St Montrose a
mere seven or eight miles away, Balnillo is right on the Forfar Montorse branch line at that time. her youngest child Davis Collie would have been 16 years old at that time.

Agnes Ann Dorian is buried in Cowie (Died 25 Aug 1903).
I have a photo of the Memorial inscription She and son Alexander
are buried there.

I talked to Charles Dorian about ten days ago just
shooting the breeze.  I met Chatles about two years ago
as a result of an enquiry I had a friend put in the
Aberdeen Family History Quarterly regarding Thrift.

Charles is about 2.5 hour car ride away from Delta down south.

What do you make of the issues over Thrifts mums name Chisholm/Chessit?

Can we communicate off line from this form?

Hi Angus,

I think that Chissit is a mistake.  She is down as Chisholm on the 1841 &1851 census records. If you think back to 1829, not many people were litterate, and whoever wrote the OPR's just spelt things as he thought, and perhaps "Chissit" is some local pronunciation of Chisholm. I've had someone who is more up to speed with OPR's check out the Scotlands People website for any previous instances of the name Chissit, or even simmilar spellings, and she could find no records with this name.

I'll send you a PM with my email address so we can continue this discussion away from this forum.

I found Thrift Watt in my tree when I was researching my second cousins side of the family.  On both marriage entries fro Thrift to Agnes Dorian & Isabella Lees his mother's maiden name is Chisholm.  On his death entry this infomation has been left out.

Hi Allan3349, and welcome to rootschat.

I'd be most interested in how Thrift fits into your tree and anything else you know about the family.

I know that Thrift and Agnes had 9 children, my Grandmother, Bridget being the eldest. I also know about Elizabeth who was, I think, the youngest, but I don't know anything about any of the others.

Any information would be much appreciated

Seems Thrift was a notorious chap!!.........I believe he is my great great grandfather..........I have copy of my great grandfathers mariage certificate showing Thrift Watt as father. Marriage was in 1874 when my great grandfather George Watt was 21, so assume he was born in 1853...........when Thrift was married to Barbara , maiden name Davidson........does this mean he was married 3 times and sired even more children?

George was a farm worker in the county of Kincardine area  and my grandfather, Andrew Watt was born in 1874, and became a police sergeant in Arbroath.........he had 4 sons and 3 daughters.........and my father was the last chief engineer on the original Queen Mary....sadly all  have passed away.

I have only recently started researching this on "scotlandspeople.com" and found the entry on roots.com most interesting

Goodness me ! !

I didn't know anything about Barbara Davidson, but you could well be correct.

What was your great-grandmother's name, and where did she and George get married?

I've found out that Thrift's father and grandfather were both called George Watt, and my mother had a brother George Watt Gove, and Thrift had a grandson George Watt killed at Gallipoli.

I know Thrift married Isabella Lees in Aberdeen on 17 August 1855.
I'm assuming that Barbara must have died before this date, but I don't know for sure. As ScotlandsPeople records start in 1855, it may be hard to find out what happened to her.

I'd be most interested in hearing about the rest of your family. I was interested in hearing about your father and the Queen Mary. I spent over 6 years at sea in the Merchant Navy myself.

Cheers
Jim

Welcome to Rootschat Andyqm

Thrift WATT is my gg grandfather.

I had a look at OPR's between 1831
and 1854 for WATT/ DAVIDSON and found 12
records, most in the North East. but no
Thrift or Barbara's.

Between the 1851 Census for FORDYCE when
Thrift was single and 1855 when he married Isabella LEES
in Aberdeen a lot could happen.

Do you have a Surname for George WATT's wife in 1874 marriage?

Like Rowena I am fascinated by the possibilities
please keep us in touch with your research on this Guy Thrift

Regards
