LOCKE Family - Corner Hall
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 20:54 UTC (UK) »

I seem to have trouble finding more about my GG grandmother.. Eliza? Elizabeth? Locke (c.1848) she was married to a John Crew (c1851) and in the 1891 census they lived at 9 Corner Hall Boxmoor,1891 in Popes lane Hemel.i cant find any more out about her or her family ...It is rumoured she came from a whisky distillery family and there was a maltsters called Locke & Smith in the area that went bust.Does any one have any more information about this family or company?.I did see a article William J Locke(author) wrote and he gave his address at time as Corner Hall and i wondered if he was a cousin or brother of Eliza.Thanks.

Their marriage is listed below - that would give you her Father's name:

Crew, John
Locke, Eliza
Marriage
Q December 1870
Hemel Hempstead
Hertfordshire
Vol 3a
Pg 553

I take it you want to go further back with the census records?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

If that is the correct marriage - then the 1871 entry shows Eliza was 19 (b 1852) and was b Northants - not Herts

What was her birthplace on the 1891 census entry you found?

The birth place states Evenley, Northamptonshire on the later census.

There is an Elisabeth Lock, age 4, born Sulgrave in the 1851....not nextdoor, but not a million miles away.  Closest I can find so far...

I suppose I do need to get the wed cert to get further clues to her father. The only other clue that I have is that William J Locke( who doesnt seem to have been born in the uk) writes a article from Corner Hall and I can only guess he is a brother or cousin or just a coincidental name.

It's a constant learning thing, this family tree lark! Grin

I think this is him...seems it might just be a name coincidence, but never say never!

I think Corner Hall was a street rather than a place - it shows 9 Corner Hall on the census.  The street is still there though!
