Chapel of Ease
« on: Monday 17 November 08 21:17 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell me what a 'Chapel of Ease' was? Would it have been part of an Established Church and would a marriage there have any special significance?

Regards,
Carol

A Chapel of Ease was usually a second church within a parish, built to make it easier for parishioners to attend services; it would therefore have been situated a distance from the main parish church. they are to be found in R.C. parishes.

Not just RC ?

Billericay is a good example - brick built Chapel of Ease in the high street early 1800s - Parish Church was actually 3 miles away in Great Burstead, a particularly significant piece of architecture in comparison !

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for your help. I would say I'm looking for a C.of I. marriage.

Presumably any marriage would have been recorded in the main parish records.

Carol

Hard to advise on that, as you have given no details of which parish, which chapel!
