There's the National Burial Index which you can access via the pay per view site at http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/

Later  He appears to be alive in 1851. In 1841 part of the household was James 25 miller. In 1851 still in Bluntisham James 34 miller b Somersham son of William Freeman 66 Miller b Somersham

Bluntisham burials up to 1900 are on the NBI but there's no William Freeman.

The only one that comes close on the NBI is a William Freeman buried in St. Thomas a Becket, Ramsey, on 15 Apr 1862, aged 64.  However, the NBI is not a definitive record of burials - it's nowhere near complete.

Have you not been able to establish a death date through the BMD registers ?   Have you looked in the IGI registers ?

Ahh, you want to go back - I thought you were trying to establish a date of death.  To be honest, I don't think a grave will be of much help, because only the better off could afford gravestones, and if a gravestone does exist, it's touch and go whether it will have the information on it that will help you.

On a more hopeful note, bedfordshire boy seems to have found your ancestor in the 1851 census, with an apparent birth date of about 1785.  There is a submitted entry in the IGI for a William Freeman b. 1790 in Somersham, father Moses Freeman and mother Mary Darwood.  So there is a good possibility that this information is on Somersham parish records, if you can find out where they are kept.  Try the Cambridgeshire Council web site for starters.

I'll gladly trade your dead-end for mine - mine are in London  Wink

Dead end my rear end! You're just getting into the interesting phase, where not everything jumps out at you from the comfort of your chair in front of your computer.

You now have the 1851 census which gives his birthplace (and that of his son James) as Somersham, Hunts. Somersham is one of the many Hunts parish registers which the LDS wasn't allowed to film, so it's not on the IGI or BVRI, nor is a transcript available from Hunts FHS. The only place that I'm aware of that you can view the parish register is Huntingdon records office. If you can't get to Huntingdon they run a very reasonably priced and friendly research service. See http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/visiting/crohuntingdon.htm

My 3xg grandmother was from Somersham, so I know how frustrating it can be not to have access to data online.
