Hi Andcarred
Some of my Dad's families spent time in Bourke (owned quite alot of same 1880s - 1920s). The original settlers, after finding gold in Victoria, went to Bourke, up the Darling River by Paddlesteamer. I keep wishing they had gone to Melbourne via the Murray instead
But I digress, I have Vol IX from the "History of Bourke" produced by the historical society. I believe my Dad bought this from the library, when he visited in the 1990s. There is no index, just a collection of papers, notes, records etc. There is an alpha section - related to "names from the index cards" - unfortunately it only goes to M - perhaps other volumes give the rest of the alphabet. There is no mention of Capewell.
I would think the library, as referenced by Cazay could be a useful source. Not sure what has happened there over the past 10 years, but when my folks were there, they got most of their information from the library.
I'm wondering who would have run the orphanage? Both the Methodist and Presbyterian churches appeared in Bourke in the 1880s - it seems the Presbyterians had a longer presence - would they have built an orphanage. Church archives may be of assistance.
Trish
