Difference in marriage age
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 17:17 UTC (UK) »

I thought i had found my Great great grandmother, every thing fits fathers name ,what he did for a living(i have their marriage cert)and the area they came from. So i did as you suggested (sent for her birth cert) and i have a three week discrepency in age, when she got married it said 21, clearly she was 21 ,3 weeks later. Was it wrong to be married in 1865 before 21,she came from a fairly wealthly family of proffesion and then looking deeper into it she was heavily pregnant.Sorry to go off on one but my question is ,did they often lie on their marriage details.

Hi jules

21 was the age of majority and before that age she would have had to have parental permission. Was it possible that this wouldn't have been given?

There was no proof of age requirement so she could very likely have said 21 ( 3 weeks is not too far out).

My great grandfather said he was 22. He was actually 18.

An awful lot more than you might initially think.

Don't believe everything that your grannie either said or told you!  (Or not 100% anyway  Grin )
