Wolverhampton, Haden family mystery
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 11:20 UTC (UK) »

Many thanks to DudleyWinchurch for the link to the archive page I was looking for - that's added three new people to my tree, but sadly, not the one I was looking for.  I wonder if anyone might have a bright idea for me - Is there any way that I could have a best quess at a child's parentage without actually having to buy a copy of the certificate? The 1891 census shows my great grandparents as having two granddaughters, and I'm unable to work out whos's the parent.......I've done a search on ancestry and genesreunited to see if they're in anyone elses tree, to no avail.. I have the GRO but though if I could save £14 I'd give it a go.  You never know. Rootschatters usually do come up trumps!!

Hi - you might like to give us a few more details of which census page/family you are looking at,  it is easier to try and help if we have seen the information available.

Which sister did Henry marry? Was it Ann -  if so, there is a possible family in 1901 with 12 year old Alice Moore
- all born Heath Town - place of birth 1891 looks to be Heath

1901 Staffordshire Heath Town   RG13/2688 130/6
Henry Moore head M 33 Bricklayer's labourer staffs Heath Town
Ann do wife m 28  Staffs heath Town
Alice do daur S 12 do do
Fanny do daur S 8 do do
Mary do daur S 3 do do
Elizabeth do daur S 8 mo do do

I can't place Louie - is the name correct, listed as g dau? but would guess Harriet - purely by age of Mother - but who owns Albert? Are Albert and Louie likely to be siblings?

The 1911 census is due next year, if you can wait, that may help to resolve the mother of Louie.

It's quite a complex family, Trish [aren't they all!!]
It's clear how much I got bogged down with it, because now I've gone back for another look, I see that I have indeed got Alice as first daughter of Ann, born before her marriage to Henry!!

Mary seems to have been a real matriarchal type, and various grandchildren ended up living with her from several different of her children.
Harriet did have a daughter, Fanny, born 1903, so it's quire possible that Louie was another
Eliza was Harriet's mother, and also had Minnie.  By the 1901 census, she would still have been young enough to have another.

Alfred was Susan's son.
I guess I'll just buy a copy certificate to stop me wondering!  Wink

They do seem a liberated lot of ladies - when it was not at all fashionable to be this way, and no doubt the children were lucky that there was a lady around like Mary to care for them all, while the mothers went to work.

One of my gg grandmothers raised three generations (siblings, children and grandchildren) - one of my great Aunts used to love talking about her, she was adored by everyone  - your Mary sounds much the same.

It would be possible for Louie to belong to Eliza, Elizabeth or Harriet or Susan?? - but the 1911 might help - otherwise a certificate - Christmas present to self perhaps  Smiley

I wondered if you ever bought the certificate -  a  "free" search on the 1911  (which doesn't provide alot)  appears to have the following in an "institution" in Wolverhampton

Alfred Haden aged 14
Eliza Haden aged 49
Louisa Haden aged 11

which fits with the names/ages you have in 1901 - if we assume Louie is Louisa. I don't know how much information would be given for an institution if you paid to check.

Trish, my certificate arrived this morning!  Louie is recorded as Eliza's daughter  Shocked
Re. the 1911 details- I know Alfred was in the children's equivalent of the workhouse twice before being emigrated to Australia, and the date fits with one of these periods.
Eliza shows as a prison inmate. I hadn't found Louie, yet, but it does sound like Louise might be the Louise might be her................

Well my query was well timed  Smiley  I am glad  you matched them, but sad as to where they spent some of their childhood - perhaps after their grandmother died. I hope you find all good things happening for Louie/Louisa

Richard - I emailed you, but wonder if the message got through? I believe we've had contact before - can now add to what we previously knew.
