St Breock Births/Baptisms
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 17:17 UTC (UK) »

I have been searching for St Breock Parish Births/Baptisms but can't seem to find a site that has any listed. Did find one for grave stones but this did not help as the person I am trying to trace was born at St Breock but died in Egloshayle I think. He is listed on the 1881 census as John S Hill Born about 1833 his death was registered in the Bodmin area Q4 1899 vol 5c page 54. have tried Cornish OPC and also LDS still no joy can anyone suggest where else to look

I was looking at 1891 census but sadly lost the page, it looked like your family In Plymouth, which is right from what you said
A son GEORGE b abt 1873 Wadebridge, James was also down as Wadebridge
Then rest of children born Devon
Maybe someone can recheck...so marriage maybe early abt 1872

I Have copies of both the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census returns for James Hill when he was living in Plymouth, though it does not show a George Hill on the 1881 census he could have been staying at his grandparents on the night of the census, he is present with he rest of the family on the 1891 Census.
James is shown as a Merchant Seaman on the 1881 census so it is possible that he was still a seaman and got married some 10 years later in Portsea Hampshire, the question is why would they travell all that way just to get married. I Suppose they could have moved from Plymouth to Portsea and then moved back again  between 1888 and 1890. They lived at the same address on both 1891 and 1901 census.

If that is their marriage, they possibly married elsewhere as they had been living as a married couple for some time. Easy enough to get to by sea.

Just did a quick search and fond 3 James Hill born at Portsea between 1856 and 1873 and did the same for Ellen Williams same area and came up with 6 matches for 1856 -1873. so its probably safe to say they are not my James and Ellen who married at Portsea

Hi Steve,

Young George appears to be with his Uncle in 1881 under the name of Williams so it appears they were not married when he was born. I haven't found a likely marriage so far. Always a chance there was no marriage of course.  Undecided

St Breock

WILLIAMS George Nephew 7 b St Breock

Home of George WILLIAMS 29 b Probus Gen Lab and Family

George William WILLIAMS b Jun 1/4 1875 St Col 5c 102

I suspect he was not James's son. James Ivey Hill's first son was probably James Ivey HILL Mar 1/4 1879 Plymouth 5b 309

I note George and Ellen WILLIAMS can be found in Probus in 1861 with their parents Luke and Jane. Luke is an ag lab

George WILLIAMS 12 and Ellen 8

Probus

Working back Luke and Jane are already married by 1841

possible only just as I see a possible marriage in the right district

Luke WILLIAMS = Jane RICHARDS June 1/4 1841 Truro 9 351

Hi Kriss

Thanks for your reply, you have been an immense help, I had my great grandmother down as Ellen Jane Williams Probus 1854 and her father John Williams coming from Falmouth (1832) and her mother Eliza James (1832)from Calstock. When I checked my grandad's birth certificate his mother was down as Ellen Williams so I never checked out the possibility of another Ellen Williams born Probus for the same year. So it seems that I have been on the wrong tack all this time. Since I received your reply I have checked back on the census records and have found Luke Williams on 1861 Census where you stated and found his date of birth 27 9 1812 (Gerrans) on LDS also his father and mother, same source along with 2 brothers born at Gerrans.  So thank you for your monumental help. Grin Grin Grin

As to George I had came to the same opinion that he was either not James son or he had been born before they married and been given his mothers family name.  Embarrassed  As to James and Ellen as he is listed as a Merchant Seaman it is possible they could have married at sea or at least by a sea Captain, but where do you start looking for that ? Huh  Marriage certificate would have resolved these problems .  The search goes on.  Can't thank you enough for all your help  Kiss Kiss Kiss
