St Albans Prison - John BRADSHAW
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 13:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Does anyone know how or where to get information about inmates and their crimes.  John Bradshaw a boatman, who I think may be great uncle of mine, was shown to be in prison at St Albans on the 1901 census.  I am wondering what his crime was.

I have emailed the heritage dept who are now responsible for what is left of the prison (which seems only to be the facia and lodge behind it) but have not heard from them.

As a matter of interest the facia was used in Porridge as Slade Prison.

Cheers

Ginger

Indeed it was! Grin  I was at school at St Albans in the seventies and used to drive pass it every day on the bus.  In those days I believe that the building belonged to British Rail.

However to answer your question.  HALS should have Assizes records, but if they do not then they will be able to advise where they are held.
