My first posting on this site!
I have been researching my BATSTONE family who appear in the 1851 Census in Chard Somerset.
Robert Batstone was listed as being born in Chard about 1814 and married Eliza Taylor about 1835 in Chard. Does anyone have access to the Chard parish records or would be prepared to look up the marriage and baptisms for me? I would dearly love to find out more about my GGGGrandparents.
Can't believe I havn't discovered this site before! Thankyou

I am a Batstone through my Grandmother. I have done much research throughout Devon, Somerset, New Zealand, Australia and here in the United States. Chard is only about 20 miles North East of Axminster which is the center of activity for my early Batstone ancesters which I have back to 1645. There is an additonal line of Batstone that are currenly traced back to 1679 and make up much of the New Zealand and Austrailian Batstones. The probably cross somewhere prior to the dates we have but until we finid that individual they are considered two separate lines.
I will dig through my data and see what I have on Chard and Batstones. A quick glance shows a William Batstone dieing in Chard at age 82 in March of 1881. I also have 13 Batstones born in Chard in the 1840's.
I will continue to search my records and post them here.

Thankyou "THenry" - at last a fellow Batstone Researcher! I would be very grateful if you would be able to help me - most of the other Batstones seem to be in Devon. Regards

Ahaa!! I too am researching the Batstone Family of Chard, Somerset. I've discovered that my Fathers' Paternal Grandmother appears in the 1891 (and I know for CERTAIN that I have the correct record)as Helen Hancock b. c.1861 Chard, married to Francis Hancock b. Fen Ditton, Cambridge. It appears that by 1901 they had moved to Cambridge, but her name is recorded as ORPHA; correct age, b. Chard. Now, Orpha was/is NOT a common name, so further investigations found in the 1871 ELLEN Batstone living with an elder married sister and another elder sister. I've discovered to my annoyance that those Innumerators were not always careful when entering information - also that people LIED left-right-and-centre too! Doesn't make it easier for us poor devils in the future to research their Families! Anyway, I believe Helen/Ellen/Orpha was one and the same person. I believe she had sisters named Helah, Elizabeth and Selina. I believe one of her sisters married an Adolphus REISS.
If anyone can enlighten me further, I would be really REALLY grateful!
Ta muchley,
Flora-Mae

Morning Dee-Jay! Many thanks for your reply, I think you DO have the correct family. There weren't many Orphas about.
Chard St Mary's Marriage No. 137 18 Oct 1835 by Banns Robert BATSTONE (sgd) Bachelor of this Parish Eliza TYTHERLEIGH (x) Spinster of this Parish Witnesses: William BATSTONE (x); Eml MUTTON (a regular)
This is wonderful information - I bet you didn't get THIS via the internet did you? I feel pretty disappointed at the lack of Parish Record info that's available - although of course, I could well be looking in the wrong direction.
I didn't think ordinary people did things like alter names/birthdates etc for official purposes! I thought back in those times, especially the 'ordinary' folk were all God-fearing people and did EVERYTHING by the book. I was wrong then!
I've looked for Orpha's birth info but come up a blank.
Thanks again Dee-Jay,
Flora-Mae XX
PS - I have a Photo of Orpha/Ellen/Helen taken during WWI with 2 of her sons if you're interested!
