They seem to have christened first born (?) daughter back at Stoneykirk: JEAN WILSON  Christening: 03 DEC 1838 Stoneykirk, Wigtown. Their 1851 census entry if you don't have it - all the children showing as born in New Monkland:

Alexander Wilson 43, Farmer Of 13 Acres Employing, b. Renfrew
Jane Wilson 44, b. Stoneykirk, Wigton
Jane Wilson 13
John Wilson 9
Alexander Wilson 7
William Wilson 4
James Wilson 1
Agness Wilson 19, sister, b. New Monkland

Address: Craigend, New Monkland Lanarkshire

Bodach

This is all guesswork from me  Roll Eyes I've been trying to see whether there are any clues in their children's names. Have you got their 1841 census entry? This looks like them in 1841:

John Ritchie 65, farmer
Alexander Wilson 60, MS (Male servant normally)
Janet Wilson 12, visitor
Agnes Wilson 9, b Scotland
Mary Wilson 6
Alexander Wilson 30, MS, b. Scotland
Jane Liddle (LIttle?) 30, FS, b Scotland
Jane Wilson 2
Alexander Wilson 10 Months
Mary McInnis 25, FS, b. Scotland

Address: Schedule East Craigend, New Monkland

The 1841 census is the most limited in terms of info. No relationships included within the household and everyone's ages over 15 are supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5yrs.

Now, given that Alexander Wilson shows with family at Craigend in 1851 as farmer, I checked the Wills & Testaments at Scotlands People, (wondering whether he may have been left the farm or taken it over from John Ritchie).  There is an entry for John Ritchie:

John Ritchie - 27/11/1847, resided in Craigend, parish of New Monkland, thereafter at Badenheath, co. Dunbarton - Inventory, Trust Disposition and Deed of Settlement   Dumbarton Sheriff Court   SC65/34/5

I would imagine from the above entry that Alexander Snr. is Alexander Wilson's father? The first born Alexander showing above looks to have died given there is a 7 yr old Alexander showing in 1851.

Do you have the name for Alexander Wilson's mother. At a guess I would imagine that Jane's mother was also called Jane, given the name of their first born daughter and maybe John for her father given we also have a 9 yr old John in 1851.

Not seeing much though on IGI and only one Little birth with father John shows in Stoneykirk between 1795-1830. Not sure how you take it from here. I assume there was only a basic OPR entry for her marriage in 1837. You might find something useful on daughter Jane's christening in Stoneykirk in 1838 by way of names of sponsors perhaps.

Alexander Wilson's entry in Wills & Testaments on SP, in case you haven't seen it:

Alexander Wilson, 01/10/1868, farmer at Craigend, New Monkland, spouse of Jane Little or Wilson   I   Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories   SC36/48/60

There seems to be only one Little family showing in Stoneykirk in 1841:

John Little 30, agr. lab. b Ireland
Margaret Little 25
Jean Little 6
William Little 4
Margaret Little 6 Months

Address: Ardwell, Stoneykirk

Monica

This looks to be the christening of the youngest Margaret above:

MARGARET LITTLE     Christening: 10 JAN 1841 in Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents:JOHN LITTLE and MARGARET MCCLYMONT

Hi Monica.

Thanks for all the info here.

Other than what it says on the census about Jane Little being born in Stoneykirk and the christening being there too, I cant find the connection.. yet.

Alexander Wilson snr could well be Alexander's father. Alexanders mother was Margaret Ritchie, so the John Ritchie listed on the 1841 could be his Uncle? More and more to unravel.. lol

Thanks again

Hi David

I did see this potential entry on IGI for Alexander to parents Alexander Wilson and Margaret Ritchie:

ALEXANDER WILSON  Christening: 21 APR 1811 Renfrew, and also,
JEAN WILSON Christening: 24 SEP 1809 Renfrew

Maybe the inventories and documents on SP for John Ritchie and Alexander Wilson may contain some further information, although sadly, probably not about wife Jane's origins.
