thanks for your post, It is really great news for me as it has taken me years of trying to get any where with this side of my familytree as I could not read the name Onyans, but now I have gggrans name: Mary Onyans/onion, she married Patrick Hughes and they had my great Gran Catherine, from 1901 census I now know that my great Gran was born in Kilashee,co longford. So maybe Patrick Hughes was  from there as well ? I would love to get any more information on any of these people, so any advice on where to find information would be great!

I don't know which religion they are/were... there is an "estate" church there but I am very seldom that way at the moment...Which religion were they?

Your gran wouldn't be Onyan but Hughes.

A quick lookup on Onion surname for all Ireland only shows 2....in Longford!

And Onions shows 5....Laois 3, Mayo 1, and Westmeath 1!

Onyan = 0!!

Onion/s and Hughes in the same parish = 1 in Mayo!! where both Onions and Hughes households are recorded in the same parish in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64.

hi, I should have made my last post clearer, my great Gran Catherine Hughes was married in dunoon Scotland on her marriage cert she named her father as Patrick Hughes and her mother as Mary Onyans.
on the 1901 census, Dunoon she has put that her place of birth was Co longford.
My great Gran Catherine Hughes was 18yrs old when she married in 1898, so was born in 1880 so her parents could have been married/lived/born in co longford.
From Catherine Hughes marriage cert they were married in a Roman Catholic Church so I would imagine that her religion was RC, does that help

Well there were only 2 Onion families in Longford but the first family to look at would be the Onion of Kilashee. As she was born in 1880 their parents must have married 1879 or so.

You should be able to order a Marriage Cert with the information you have!

 Or write to the PP., St Patrick's Church, Kilashee, Co Longford. who might look up the record for you.

Or email Jack Farrell =      (*) who is a genealogy record submitter in Co Longford
