William Lowther 2nd Earl of Lonsdale/Newton
« on: Saturday 10 January 09 15:35 UTC (UK) »

I'm seeking information of John Howarth Newton born 1845. Mother Mary Howarth born Kirkby Lonsdale 1810 and any connection to William Lowther 2nd Earl of Lonsdale.

Hi and welcome to rootschat.
Can you give a bit more information?    How do you know about the birth and Mary's name and age?   Can you quote a census record.  I am not quite clear about whether John was called Howarth or Newton and cannot find a suitable candidate in 1851.
Do you have John's birth certificate?

Right.  I have found them now in Lancashire in 1851.  HO107 2258 254 34 for the benefit of others who might want to help.
Mary Newton is shown as married and Head of household, Housekeeper.
John Howarth Newton is age 6 and born in Clitheroe
(birth registered Jan quarter 1845 Clitheroe 21 417)
there are several lodgers.
There is another Mary Newton living in Lowther with husband Robert in 1851.
Have you been in touch with the Lowther estates to see if they keep family and servant details in their archives?

Thanks for your reply.
Mary Howarth servant of Stanley Terrace/either Clitheroe or Preston married Anthony Newton widower on March 3rd 1844. On January 28th 1845 John Howarth Newton was born.
On the 1851 census Anthony Newton was back living with his parents At bawdlands Clitheroe.
Mary as you have found out back in Lancs still married & head of family with her son. On the 1861 census  Mary is back in Preston still married and Head living with her son. I cannot find any more information about Anthony after 1851 or Mary after 1861.
I would like to discover Marys life  & were she worked  from when she was born in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Do you have the marriage certificate?    If not then that should be your first move as it will give Mary's father's name and occupation.   You might then be able to find them in 1841, though it is highly likely that she will already be in service by then.  The names of witnesses might hlep too as they are often family members.

PS.  Why do you think there might be a connection with the Lowthers?
